Si je vous
propose d'aller écouter un CD du Cotton Soeterboek Band,
vous allez surement vous trouvé un rendez-vous piscine ou
réunion de copropriété. Et bien comme quoi il ne faut
jamais se fier aux apparences puisque ce CD "Twisted"
n'est pas moins qu'un mini coup de coeur. Alors d'oů qu'y
sortent ceux lŕ vous me direz? Et bien je vous présente
Robert Soeterboek, le chanteur, il a notamment participé ŕ
Ayreon et Alan Cotton, guitariste sudiste (Alabama), qui
forment donc leur Band et n'ont pas trouvé mieux que ce
nom pas super racoleur. Ils sont rejoint par Joost van den
Broek aux claviers puis par Mike Davis ŕ la basse et
Reynold Carlson ŕ la batterie (remplacés depuis l'album
par, respectivement, Wim den Boer et Wilfried Broekman).
Voila pour les présentations. Ils avait sorti un EP en
2006 et ils nous présentent enfin leur premier album. Et
lŕ, je dois dire qu'on tombe immédiatement sous le charme.
En tout cas si vous aimez les voix chaudes et puissantes
style Coverdale, si vous aimez ŕ la fois le métal british
style Magnum mais aussi le métal sudiste style Lynyrd
Skynyrd, et surtout les claviers style Jon Lord alors vous
allez, comme moi, tomber raide de ces morceaux au son
carré, aux refrains accrocheurs, au chant superbe de
Robert, et au son de piano si caractéristique de Deep
Purple et des vieux Whitesnake (époque Micky Moody/Bernie
Marsden aux guitares). Sur le premier morceau "Colorado",
c'est saisissant, le refrain est excellent, l'hallu
totale. Sur "Gray and Blue" puis le plus langoureux "Leave
Me Blue", ils nous emmčnent dans le sud des USA, la
guitare assure, l'orgue Hammond s'en donne ŕ coeur joie.
Encore un refrain qu'on est pas pręt d'oublier. J'adore le
morceau suivant "Little Sister", la voix y est encore plus
chaude, bluesy, di diou ! ça sonne comme du bon vieux
Whitesnake (je crois que je l'ai déjŕ dis ça). Je connais
pas sa copine Maureen, mais je le regrette en écoutant
"Pretty Maureen". C'est basique mais une fois plus, je ne
peux empęcher ma tęte de bouger d'avant en arričre, mon
voisin d'embouteillage me regarde bizarrement. Je parie
qu'il connait męme pas The Cotton Soeterboek Band le gros
naze. Et ça continue comme ça sur "Set Me Free" et "Still
Of The Night" ( tiens ça vous rappelle rien ce titre ?),
des bons refrains, des riffs carrés, un gros synthé, et
une voix magnifique. En plus sur "Still Of The Night", le
pianiste lâche un peu son orgue et passe ŕ un bon vieux
piano "Lynyrd-ien", c'est trčs, trčs bon. Plus bluesy
encore. On atteint ma chanson préférée de l'album, "The
Game", avec un refrain monstrueux chanté dés l'intro.
J'adore ! Le guitariste finalement n'en fait pas des
tonnes (pour lui c'est "cotton" - facile celle la) c'est
peu ętre ça aussi la classe, qui sait, aujourd'hui on
trouve des rois du shredding ŕ tous les coins de rues. Il
assure, des gros riffs, et quelques rares soli. Le dernier
morceau donne le titre ŕ l'album, mid-tempo, et termine
cet album (déjŕ ?) aussi bien qu'il avait
commencé.
En résumé: la belle gifle ŕ laquelle on ne
s'attendait pas du tout ! Entre Whitesnake, Magnum et
Lynyrd Skynyrd, vous trouvez surement une place pour ce
petit (seulement 32mn, quelqu'un pourrait peut ętre les
prévenir que sur un CD on peut en mettre plus que sur un
bon vieux vinyle de l'époque) bijou de hard rock (British,
FM, Sudiste, ...). Du pur plaisir de road music auquel il
est difficile de résister, et ce, dés la premičre écoute.
Maintenant certains pourront casser pour plagiat ou manque
d'originalité, mais moi finalement je trouve ça trčs bon.
Donc j'applaudis des 2 mains...
The Cotton Soeterboek Band is basically an
all-star cast with the band members seeing time in bands
like Maestro Alex Gregory, Star One, Ayreon, Rob Halford
Band, After Forever and Driver. With such a diverse set of
styles from the members’ previous bands. I really wasn’t
sure what to make of TWISTED. If you take a look at the
album cover it really doesn’t look like a Hard Rock or
Heavy Metal release, I thought it looked like more of a
Folk Rock type thing. You should never judge a CD by it’s
cover because you can get surprised and I was! The Cotton
Soeterboek Band is all about ’70s style Hard Rock, Blues,
and Southern Rock all rolled together to give it that
overall Classic Rock sound. Add the groovy rhythm section
to the Blues based guitar of Alan Cotton, add Joost van
den Broek’s keys/organ and the deep melodic vocals of
Robert Soeterboek and you get a cool ’70s combination of
early Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Bad Company and Lynyrd
Skynyrd.
Opening track ‘Set Me Free’ sounds almost
like Deep Purple combined with Bad Company Hard Rock with
it’s thick guitar/organ riffs and deep soulful vocals from
Soeterboek while ‘Pretty Maureen’ is a little more hook
oriented and sounds like an early David Coverdale on the
vocals. What I immeadiately hear from the first two tracks
is that this is a really tight band of solid musicians and
the interplay between the guitar and the keyboards set the
tone for the entire album. The title track slows down and
is extremely bluesy and I can’t stop hearing a little
Robert Cray and Stevie Ray Vaughn in the music, ‘Twisted’
sounds so familiar like I’ve heard it before on all the
local classic rock radio stations. ‘Colorado’ keeps the
blues base but is much more melodic with a cool soulful
Coverdale delivery complete with vocal harmonies and a
slow hand guitar. The keys add a depth to the song rather
than trying to compete with the guitar it all sounds so
natural, ‘Colorado’ is my favorite from the
album.
‘Leave Me Blue’ is a cool Skynyrd/Allmans
style ballad that shows off the band’s Southern side while
‘Little Sister’ picks up the Hard Rock groove like early
Whitesnake. The power in ‘Little Sister’ is in the chorus
where the vocal harmonies, guitar and keys all combine to
hit you with a wall of sound. By the time the upbeat ‘Gold
And Gray’ hits the speakers, I’ve already decided that
Soeterboek really does sound like David Coverdale at his
deepest. ‘Gold And Gray’ could be the twin song to
‘Colorado’ with it’s upbeat melody and tempo but it also
has that Southern Rock vibe to it and you can hear the
Lynyrd Skynyrd influence. More Hard Blues Rock hits with
‘Still Of The Night’ and incorporates regular piano in
with the music kind of like the Allmans and Skynyrd do,
the piano solo is smooth. Ending song ‘The Game’ is more
of the Blues based hard Rock that started the album off
and ends the album on a high note. The only drawback to
TWISTED is that it’s such a short record clocking it at
just over 31 minutes. The music was so good throughout the
entire album that I was looking for a little
more.
Bottom Line:
I’ve had the album for a
long time and it’s sat in the growing pile of CDs on my
desk getting lost in the shuffle. I should have played
this disc as soon as I got it because it is a really
awesome album that reminds me of all the great bands that
I hear on the radio everyday…..it’s like a modern time
capsule of the best of ’70s Rock. I really enjoyed it and
I wish I could go back to this past December and pull out
an album from my Top 30 so I could slot this one in.
Definitely a band to keep an eye on in the future and
definitely an album worth seeking out.

Ok, it’s time to dust down those flared
jeans and denim shirts as this album ‘Twisted’ is a
throwback to the times when real classic rock was at its
very best in the 70’s, and hell doesn’t this band do it
justice, big style!
The band are ‘The Cotton Soeterboek Band’,
named after its two main members Robert Soeterboek and
Alan Cotton, so if the likes of early Whitesnake and Deep
Purple in its ‘Burn’ era do it for you, then you’re in for
a real treat because this is the nearest you’ll hear to
these bands.
‘Set me free’, with its choppy guitar riff
and neatest of touches on keyboards transport you back
there, the harmonies so familiar they switch on that
button in your head, and you just can’t help but tap your
foot and nod your head in unison, that sound makes you
feel so at home.
‘Pretty Maureen’, (surely a first for song
title with that name in!) oozes class with its bluesy
touches on guitar that eases the song along, whilst
Soeterboek seems to have been born to sing it, his voice
uncannily perfect for what is needed here. There’s only
one other person that could have done this job, but he’s
probably busy with his own band now getting ready for this
year’s Donnington Festival!
The title track ‘Twisted’ has got a raunchy
feel to it, due to the drawn out vocals and keyboards, the
guitar sounding as its been lifted straight out ‘Foxy
Lady’ in parts that gets your hips swaying … if you’re a
girl that is!
Surprisingly there’s only one slowish track
here, ‘Leave me blue’, beginning with a finger-picked
guitar and piano, before it picks up a bit due to the
guitar solo mid way through and another good riff shoved
in here and there. Again it’s the harmonies that shine as
they do throughout the whole album which is a miss on
quite a few occasions these days.
The band show their southern rock side with
‘Gold and Gray’, which gets those toes a-tapping and
maybes the odd “Yee-haw” if you really get carried away,
where ‘Still of the Night’ (not that one), with the funky
blues piano being the main ingredient, really goes for it
from start to finish, a good old-fashioned rock love song
just on the right side of sloppiness!
Things eventually come to an end with ‘The
Game’, another track that harks back to those 70’s times
that had everyone going and still does now judging by some
of the newer bands and the way they are setting their
stalls out.
This can only be a good thing as it’ll open
the doors for younger fans to explore the earlier bands
they’ve missed out on, so if they cotton on to this band
maybe the album will make waves in the right places
because on evidence of it, it deserves to get a listen to
by a wider audience, maybe via the rock radio stations out
there.
The only downside to the album is that at
just over 30 minutes long, its possibly 3 songs too short
for such a good one, so maybe their next release could be
just that bit longer if they push themselves as they seem
very capable to do it.

Vous aimez le hard rock teinté de
blues ? Jetez donc une oreille sur "Twisted", le premier
essai publié par The Cotton Soeterboek Band, trčs proche
dans l’esprit de groupes comme Deep Purple, Whitesnake ou
Lynyrd Skynyrd. Comme son nom (pas trčs heureux, il faut
bien l’avouer…) l’indique, cette nouvelle formation est
née de la collaboration entre le guitariste américain Alan
Cotton et le chanteur hollandais Robert Soeterboek,
peut-ętre connu par certains pour avoir travaillé avec
Arjen Lucassen sur quelques albums du projet Ayreon.
Oeuvrant donc dans un hard rock trčs traditionnel et
seventies, notre duo de malfaiteurs s’est entouré d’une
section rythmique solide et d’un clavier qui a beaucoup
écouté John Lord, le maître es clavier de Deep
Purple.
Loin d’ętre désagréable, car composé de
quelques morceaux bien sentis (« Set Me Free », « Twisted
», « Little Sister », « Still Of The Night »), "Twisted"
se révčle au bout du compte un peu fade en comparaison des
récentes sorties des légendes précitées. Il suffit de
penser par exemple au "Good To Be Bad" de Whitesnake pour
réaliser que les deux combos n’évoluent tout simplement
pas dans la męme division. Pour autant, il est impossible
de ne pas reconnaître un talent certain ŕ ces musiciens,
ne serait-ce que pour les vocaux du chanteur, Robert
Soeterboek. Lorgnant sans vergogne du côté de David
Coverdale (le côté animal en moins), son chant plein de
feeling constitue l’une des meilleures armes du combo. Je
suis en revanche plus réservé sur le guitariste, Alan
Cotton, qui, s’il se distingue par son travail en
rythmique, demeure bien timide sur ses parties solo. Il
prouve pourtant sur des titres comme « Colorado » ou « Set
Me Free » qu’il possčde une certaine finesse dans son jeu
bluesy. Or il est bien difficile, lorsque l’on évolue dans
ce créneau musical, de se passer d’un véritable tueur ŕ la
guitare, du style Ritchie Blackmore, Gary Moore ou encore
le duo Bernie Mardsen/Mick Moody, pour les nostalgiques du
Whitesnake premičre période (le meilleur disent certains,
je ne les contredirai pas sur ce point). Les mélodies,
déjŕ entendues, nous amčnent ŕ penser qu’il est préférable
d’écouter les groupes de référence dans ce genre musical,
plutôt que de s’attarder sur les compositions de ces
musiciens corrects, mais sans originalité.
Un autre détail gęnant (mais qui revęt quand
męme son importance) sur cet album réside dans sa durée,
qui dépasse de justesse les trente minutes. Neuf petites
chansons, dont pas une ne va au-delŕ de quatre minutes,
voilŕ qui me semble un peu léger dans le cadre d’un
premier album censé servir de carte de visite. Il
n’empęche que l’on passe quand męme un moment sympa en
écoutant ce groupe, qu’il faudrait voir en public avec une
bonne bičre ŕ la main, au comptoir d’un pub. A des
années-lumičre des modes actuelles, The Cotton Soeterboek
Band livre un premier essai de rock bluesy globalement
réussi. Reste qu’il faudra en donner un peu plus la
prochaine fois, pour convaincre pleinement.

Ayreon rajongók számára bizonyára ismerosen
cseng Robert Soeterboek neve: a reszelos hangú énekes
egészen a korai idok óta rendszeresen hallható volt a
projektben, így hát amikor Arjen Lucassen úgy döntött,
hogy egy kisebb turnét is bevállal a Star One égisze
alatt, szinte természetes volt, hogy Robert is bekerült a
csapatba. Nem lehetett könnyu dolga, hiszen Damian Wilson
és Russell Allen mellett o volt az egyetlen férfiénekes,
ráadásul a musor összeállításakor Arjen mester igen mélyre
nyúlt az Ayreon életmuben is. Aki viszont közelebbi
ismeretségbe került a turnéról készült DVD-vel, láthatta,
hogy Robert éloben ha lehet, még jobb, mint lemezen:
tulajdonképpen az egész teamben o volt a legnagyobb
rakenroll állat!
Ezek után szinte természetes, hogy az
egyszeri Ayreon-Star One fan alapból kíváncsi lesz arra,
mire képes barátunk Lucassen géniusza nélkül. Nos, Robert,
hangjának ismeretében cseppet sem meglepo módon, old
school hard rockkal terrorizálja hallójáratainkat, fo
tettestársai pedig egy angol-amerikai gitáros, Allan
Cotton (akirol gondolom, nemcsak én nem hallottam eddig
soha) és Joost van der Broek billentyus, akit szintén
Ayreonos körökbol, sot, Sun Caged nevu saját progmetal
bandájából is lehet ismerni (melybol utóbb kivált). Egy
megbízható ritmusszekcióval, melyet a lemez felvételei óta
lecseréltek, Roberték bevonultak az észak-hollywoodi
Piranha stúdióba és vélhetoleg még aznap fel is vették 9
nótájukat 33 percben. Ez a spontaneitás érzodik is a 70-es
éveket idézo soundon és dalokon: elso körben valóban
kellemesen simogatja a fület a Nagy Évtized legnagyobbjait
idézo muzsika; ugyanakkor hozzá kell tenni azt is, hogy
bizony a következo hallgatások során cseppet szürkül is,
amit hallunk – ez pedig egy ennyire rövid lemezanyagnál
nem kimondottan szerencsés.
Véleményem szerint jobb lett volna, ha egy
rock-blueskocsmában veszik fel a lemezt, biztos vagyok
ugyanis benne, hogy stúdiózás után klubozgattak is egy
kicsit a környéken és hogy néhány improvizatív és
szólisztikus betéttel, feldolgozással tarkítva jóval
izgalmasabb lehetett a CSB repertoárja. Stúdiólemezként ez
a dalcsokor viszont max. egy felso középkategóriának felel
meg, amely persze azért igen magas színvonalat jelent, de
hosszú távon sajnos baromira nem köt le.

These are a great
band and come across like a Southern Rock-like version of
Whitesnake complete with vocalist, Robert Soeterboek who
even sounds like David Coverdale as well.
Every single song
is a pure joy to hear and there isn’t many albums you can
say that about these days. This makes it easy to find
highlights – the entire CD – all 9 songs of it from ‘Set
Me Free’ to ‘The Game’. Each song is really polished off
with solid warm Hammond sounds from the
keyboards.
Love the
country-like ballad ‘Leave Me Blue’; ‘Colorado’ which he
is going back to; ‘Pretty Maureen’; ‘Little Sister’ with
the amazing multi-tracked choral sections and even a
number called ‘(In The) Still Of The Night’.
Real pleased I
had the honour of hearing and reviewing this
CD.

Oras vejam… Nos dias em que o rock pesado
tende a ser cada vez mais sujo e agressivo, é realmente um
prazer encontrar bandas que ainda executem uma sonoridade
como a deste The Cotton Soeterboek Band! Sua história
começa com a uniăo do guitarrista texano Alan Cotton com o
vocalista holandęs Robert Soeterboek (Ayreon), cuja
intençăo é resgatar todas as estruturas do bom e velho
Hard Rock setentista, mas de forma perfeitamente
atualizada para conquistar também um público mais
jovem.

E com certeza atingem tal objetivo
logo com seu primeiro disco. “Twisted” possui uma
excelente produçăo, feita em Los Angeles, e ficando aos
cuidados de Robert Selvaggio (Creed, Puddle Of Mudd,
Jewel) e a masterizaçăo passou pelas măos experientes de
Rodney Mills (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers). Assim
sendo, já se tem uma noçăo do que vem pela frente,
certo?
Pois bem. Mesmo repleto das maiores
referęncias – Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd e Whitesnake săo
as mais evidentes – a coisa toda é elaborada com tanto
respeito e combinada de forma muito equilibrada. Some aí a
incrível voz bluesy de Soeterboek (remete diretamente a
David Coverdale e Ray Gillen) e o leitor provavelmente
será conquistado rapidamente pela eficácia espontânea de
um repertório que soa com um jeităo até mesmo um tanto
quanto particular.
Algum destaque especial? Putz, há muita
coisa boa por aqui, e para os mais variados gostos! Mas
este escriba aqui cita “Gold And Gray” e “Still Of The
Night”, muito simpáticas e com grande ęnfase de pianos e
órgăos, além de “Colorado” e “Leave Blue”, com muitas
características do rock sulista
norte-americano.
The Cotton Soeterboek Band é bastante
convidativo aos ‘rockers’ da nova geraçăo que querem
conhecer um pouquinho do espírito dos anos 70, e ainda aos
antiquados e enrugados rockeiros que se emocionam (... ou
văo falar que năo?) com as velhas bolachas do Purple,
Uriah Heep, Skynyrd, Free, e por aí vai! Mas, fazendo jus
ao velho ditado de que ‘tudo o que é bom dura pouco’,
“Twisted” traz apenas 31 minutinhos de puro alto-astral em
forma de rock´n´roll. Muito, mas muito pouco mesmo! Mas é
o que temos, năo é mesmo? Entăo vamos apertar o ‘play’ de
novo, de novo, e de novo...

Eine Band, die nach den Namen ihrer Gründer
benannt ist, zum einen dem Gittaristen Alan Cotton und dem
Sänger Robert Soeterboek. Robert dürfte vielen noch aus
den Zeit mit Wicked Sensation bekannt sein oder von
Ayreon. Ein wirklich grandioser Sänger, der mit gewaltiger
Stimmenstärke, die sehr in Richtung Jorn Lande oder David
Coverdale geht. Die CD klingt aber keines Falls nach
Whitesnake. Hard Rock, gemischt mit alten Musikelementen,
der fast etwas Blues in manchen Songs hat. Alan Cotton
selbst bezeichnet die Musik der Band als neuen
Milenium Hard Rock. Das trifft es wohl, denn bei welchem
modernen Rock, möchte man sonst so in alten Zeiten
schwelgen wie bei dieser CD. Schon der Opener ist ein
positiver guter Laune Rocker. Der Titel Song Twisted
klingt stark nach Deep Purpel. Eine schöne Nummer ist auch
Colorado, woher die Jungs auch kommen. Little Sister auch
eine schöne Nummer , ein Bisschen im Gotthard Stil fast.
Bei Still Of The Night hat man erst den Gedanken an ein
White Snake Cover, aber es ist ein eigener Song, für mich
der stärkste neben dem Rauswerfer The Game. Das ist eine
Nummer mit viel Gefühl und purem Soul, eine fast
balladenartige Nummer, einfach ein perfekter Song,
der auf der ganzer Linie überzeugt. So wie letzten
Endes die ganze CD! Ein Rundling dem man anmerkt,
dass es mit viel Proffessionalität und Leidenschaft
produziert wurde. Daher auf jeden Fall ein Album, das dem
Hard Rock Fan Freude macht. Ein Album mit Seltenheitswert,
das man sich genau deshalb nicht entgehen lassen darf,
noch dazu bei der Klasse der Musiker.
Das weitere Line
UP: Schlagzeuger „Butch“ Carlson schwingt die Sticks bei
DRIVER und ROB ROCK, Basser Mike Davis zupft auch bei der
ROB HALFORD BAND und Keyboarder Joost van der Broek gehört
zu AFTER FOREVER. Da muss man als Musikliebhaber einfach
hellhörig werden und bei der Klasse der Musiker, der
Scheibe eine Chance geben!

As I never heard of this band [the Cotton
Soeterboek Band.. ??] before, I really didn’t know what to
expect from its odd name. The cover art work didn’t lend
any clues to what was forthcoming as I pressed play and
began my ear opening experience.
What I encountered
was a revival of great 70’s rock n roll with a southern
twist made for today!! From the first note of ‘Set Me
Free’ (which is WOW..very Deep Purple with that opening
guitar riff and accompanying keyboard) till the last note
on ‘The Game’ I was captivated. With hard rock/bluesy
guitar riffs provided by founding member Alan Cotton and
the expressive piano/organ, to the dead on beats and
rhythmic bass immediately you are drawn in to Soeterboek’s
world. But what brings this all together is the classic
70’s, raw blues, smooth but soulful voice of Robert
Soeterboek.
The collection of songs on this disc are
well arranged and produced with Track 2 ‘Pretty Maureen’
being a perfect example of what this band embodies. A
simple keyboard based melody line and guitar lick keeps
the song hooky and a foot tapper. “Colorado” brings back
that familiar Deep Purple Hammond organ with my favorite
being “Leave Me Blue. It is soulful and bluesy as you can
feel the emotion in Robert’s words. “Cold and Grey” you
would swear came off a Whitesnake cd from the early
80s.
Best thing I can say about this cd is if you
are a fan of Whitesnake [and I surely am especially of the
stuff from 1980 - 84] and Deep Purple go get this cd. I
love it and you will too!!!

komplett untrendy Sound hat sich THE COTTON SOETERBOEK
BAND um Sänger Robert Soeterboek und Gitarrist Alan Cotton
verschrieben. Gemeinsam mit Basser Mike Davis (ROB
HALFORD), Drummer Reynold "Butch" Carlson (ROB ROCK,
DRIVER) und Joost van den Broek (AFTER FOREVER) am
Keyboard gibt es eine überaus spannende Mischung aus
erdigem britischen Blues/Hard-Rock der späten 70er und
lockerem Southern-Rock.
Warum man sich stark am Sound der frühen
WHITESNAKE und "Mark 3"-DEEP PURPLE orientiert wird
schnell klar, denn die Stimme von Soeterboek klingt sehr
nach dem jungen DAVID COVERDALE. Dazu gibt es noch passend
eine kleine Prise RAINBOW. So machen der Opener "Set me
free" oder der coole Titelsong gleich mächtig Spaß, ebenso
der packend groovende Blues "Little sister". Auf dem
Papier etwas unpassend anmutend, fügt sich die mächtige
Portion Southern-Rock hervorragend in das Gesamtbild ein.
Mit reichlich LYNYRD SKYNYRD und DOC HOLYDAY-Stimmung
sorgen das balladeske "Leaving me blue" und das fluffige
"Gold and gray" für gute Laune. Ein Highlight – Ausfälle
gibt es eh nicht – ist das treibende "Still of the night",
das mit etwas härteren Southern-Vibes und herrlichem
Honkytonk-Piano daher kommt. Neue Klänge braucht man auf
"Twisted" nicht erwarten, man kennt das alles schon zur
Genüge. Die Mischung aber läuft super rein und dürfte
jedem
Classic-Rocker, der die genannten Bands mag,
hervorragend gefallen. Dafür sorgen die kurz und knackig
gespielten Songs, mit reichlich packenden Hooklines ohne
Zweifel. Der einzige Kritikpunkt zur absolut überzeugenden
Scheibe ist die kurze Spielzeit. Bei der eindeutigen
Klasse der COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND kriegt man mit einer
guten halben Stunde verdammt wenig Musik.

The Cotton Soeterboek Band: TwistedDas
Debutalbum der COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND kommt wie ein Mix
aus THE FREE, DEEP PURPLE und WHITESNAKE. Und klingt
trotzdem modern.
Die Band wurde 2006 von Gitarrist Alan
Cotton und Sänger Robert Soeterboek gegründet, nahm eine
EP auf und schiebt jetzt - Ende 2008 - ihr erstes
Langspieleisen nach.
Langspieleisen ist allerdings relativ, die
ganze Sache dauert rund eine gute halbe Stunde. Eher kurz
für ein reguläres Studioalbum (wenn es sich nicht um
Punkrock handelt).
Trotzdem wird auf "Twisted" einiges geboten,
denn groovende Rocker, unkitschige, aber ins Herz
treffende Balladen, reihen sich hier auf hohem Niveau
aneinandern.
Stück wie "Pretty Maureen", das Titelstück
"Twisted", "Colorado" oder "Still Of The Night" kann man
einfach immer wieder hören.

Gitarrist
Alan Cotton und Sänger Robert Soeterboek, der auch bei
AYREON und WICKED SENSATION zu Gange ist, haben hier ein
gutes Hard Rock Album am Start. Mit 70 er Jahre Flair,
wird hier für alle Fans von alten Whitesnake, Deep Purple
Sachen etwas dabei sein.
Schlagzeuger „Butch“ Carlson schwingt die
Trommelfelle bei DRIVER und ROB ROCK, Bassist Mike Davis
bearbeitet auch bei der ROB HALFORD BAND das Langholz und
Keyboarder Joost van der Broek gehört zu AFTER
FOREVER.
Was also einer einer Art All-Star CD gleich
kommt.
Ein Schuss Southern Rock und ab geht die
Reise.
Man stelle sich eine verrauchte Bar vor, in
der lauter Motorrad Fahrer abhängen und man kann sich das
Feeling vorstellen mit dem die Scheibe rüber
kommt.
Robert Soeterboek erinnert teilweise an
David Coverdale in seinen besten Tagen.
Eine sehr straighte Gesangsleistung. Absolut
lässig rockt das Teil in einer halben Stunde durch. Lässt
den Hörer abtauchen in alte, gute Rock Zeiten.
Atmosphärische authentische Rockmusik wie es besser nicht
sein kann.

Whitesnake avec son coté bluesy, alors "Twisted" du combo
ricain "The Cotton Soeterboeak" devrait vous ravir, car
l’on retrouve ŕ travers des titres comme "Set Me Free",
"Pretty Maureen" et surtout "Little Me Blue" tout le
feeling du Serpent Blanc. La voix de Robert Soeterboek
possčde un timbre chaud qui sied ŕ ce hard rock bluesy,
alors que la guitare d’Allan Cotton dévoile un coté groovy
sympa, les claviers De Joost van den Broek renforçant
encore le côté "old school" du groupe. Il reste que ce
quintet, ancré dans les seventies, nous offre aussi
d’autres satisfactions notamment ŕ travers le trčs sudiste
"Gold and Gray" ou le mi-tempo "Colorado" (le groupe
réside dans cette région des USA) ou la ballade "Leave Me
Blue". Un album de "classic hard rock" qui constitue l’un

The Cotton Soeterboek Band
was formed when guitarist Alan Cotton (Maestro Alex
Gregory) was searching a charismatic front man to launch
his new band. With Holland born vocalist Robert Soeterboek
(Ayreon, Wicked Sensation, Vulture), they both succeeded
writing some interesting songs. In 2006 they already
released their s/t EP, and after that they soon went back
in the studio with drummer Reynold Carlson (Driver, Rob
Rock), bassist Mike Davis (Rob Halford Band) and
keyboardist Joost van den Broek (After Forever) to begin
recording "Twisted". Later, fellow Dutch bassist Wim Den
Boer and drummer Wilfried Broekman officially joined the
band. What we get here on "Twisted" is a mix of 70's
British hard rock (Uriah Heep, early Whitesnake, Deep
Purple, Free, UFO) and U.S. southern rock (Lynyrd
Skynyrd). A lot of Jon Lord's inspired organ from Joost,
the bluesy Coverdale/Mogg-ish vocals of Robert, and short
Schenker-ish guitar solo's from Alan. Every classic hard
rock fan will like "Twisted" a lot!

Una Les Paul piantata nel verde del
Colorado e un aereo che disegna in cielo la scritta
"Twisted", sono gli elementi figurativi che rappresentano
la copertina dei The Cotton Soeterboek Band, gruppo nato
dall'incontro tra il chitarrista dell'Alabama, Alan Cotton
e del cantante tedesco Robert Soeterboek, veterano della
scena hard rock e con numerose collaborazioni alle spalle,
fra tutti cito gli Ayreon, i Wicked Sensation e gli
Highway Chile.
Il background
musicale non č molto difficile da individuare, menzionerei
Free, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black
Crowes ("Still of the Night") e primi Whitesnake ("Set Me
Free") come i gruppi che meglio possono aver costruito il
sound del gruppo.
Ad eccezion
fatta per la piu' campagnola "Gold and Gray", tutto
l'album segue gli insegnamenti dei maestri dei Seventies,
per un ottimo disco di classic rock vecchia maniera, ben
suonato e con un grande cantante dietro al microfono.

Auch wenn der Name der Cotton
Soeterboek Band nicht wirklich förderlich ist, bieten die
Mannen wirklich guten Hardrock der alten Schule.
Zumindest der Name Robert Soeterboek
dürfte dem einen oder anderen Musikfan ein Begriff sein.
Der Holländer gehörte zum Star One Line-up und sang dort
an der Seite von Russell Allen (Symphony X) und
Damian Wilson (Threshold). Die Musik der Cotton Soeterboek
Band geht aber ganz und gar nicht in diese Richtung,
sondern erinnert an schönen verrauchten 70er Jahre
Hardrock. Die neun Songs sind eingängig, laden zum
mitwippen ein und "Twisted" ist im Nu durchgehört. Zum
einen liegt das mit Sicherheit an der mageren Spielzeit
von knapp 32 Minuten, andererseits gibt es auch nicht
einen Song der wirklich. Mastermind und Gitarrist Alan
Cotton hat einfach ein Händchen für griffige Melodien und
nette Hooks. Neben den beiden Namensgebern hat man mit
Drummer Reynold "Butch" Carlson (Driver, Rob Rock),
Bassist Mike Davis (Rob Halford) und Keyboarder Joost van
den Broek (Ayreon, After Forever) noch einige mehr oder
weniger bekannte Namen im Gepäck. Die Produktion ist
ferner schön druckvoll ausgefallen, was den Hörgenuss noch
angenehmer macht. Wer auf guten alten Rock in einem
verrauchten Pub steht, macht mit dem Kauf von "Twisted"
absolut nichts falsch. Lasst Euch von dem kitschigen Cover
und der geringen Spielzeit nicht abhalten. Well done,
guys!

FFM RockAn was denkt man bei Bandnamen wie
After Forever, Ayreon, Driver oder Halford? Sicherlich
nicht an hochmelodischen Seventies Rock. Die Köpfe hinter
diesem Projekt sind Ausnahmesänger Robert Soeterboek
(Wicked Sensation/Ayreon/Star One) und Gitarrist Alan
Cotton, an deren Seite sich Halford-Bassmann Mike Davis,
Butch Carlson (Driver) an den Drums und Keyboard-Wizard
Joost van den Broek (ebenfalls Star One/After Forever)
austoben. Herausgekommen ist herrlich sanfter Seventies
Rock, mit viel Sinn für Atmosphäre und Melodie. Wer
allerdings an ausufernde Blackmore’sche Solo-Orgien denkt,
sie sich ebenfalls getäuscht. Cotton/Soeterboek
orientieren sich eher an den Allman Brothers oder den
frühen Lynyrd Skynyrd und lassen lediglich beim Opener
„Set Me Free“ klassische Uriah Heep Anleihen vorsichtig
durchblitzen. So ist „Twisted“ dann auch eher
balladesk-ruhig ausgefallen, was ebenso überraschend, wie
angenehm ist. Auf der Soll-Seite allerdings stehen
lediglich neun nie vier Minuten erreichende Tracks, die es
zusammen auf eine knappe halbe Stunde Spielzeit bringen,
was durchaus als Gegenargument zum Kauf herhalten muss.
Bei der Masse an Veröffentlichungen wird man sich’s,
befürchte ich, dann doch zweimal überlegen, ob man die
sauerverdienten Euros rausrückt. Eigentlich schade, denn,
obgleich ein echter Ausreißer, der auch länger im Ohr
hängen bleibt, vergeblich gesucht wird. „Twisted“ ist ein
durchweg stimmiges und interessantes (Mini-)Album
geworden.

Siebziger Rock mit einem Schuss
Southern Rock. Das Debütalbum rockt sehr amerikanisch ohne
große Überraschungsmomente.
Man
könnte meinen, dass es sich bei THE COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND
um eine weitere Supergroup handelt, denn mit Sänger Robert
Soeterboek (AYREON), Bassist Mike Davis (ROB HALFORD),
Drummer Reynold Carlson (DRIVER) und Keyboarder Joost van
den Broek (AFTER FOREVER) hat sich Gitarrist Alan Cotton
eine namhafte Mannschaft an Bord geholt, um das Debütalbum
"Twisted" einzuspielen. Herausgekommen ist ein lockeres
Rockalbum, das den Geist der Siebziger atmet und wunderbar
in irgendwelchen verrauchten Bars im Mittelwesten der
Staaten funktionieren könnte.
Es ist kein hartes Melodic-Rock-Album
geworden, wie man vielleicht anhand der früheren Bands
hätte erwarten können, sondern ein klassisches Rockalbum,
bei dem sich die Musiker auf das Wesentliche konzentriert
haben und ohne viel Firlefanz auskommen. Die Produktion
ist vollkommen in Ordnung und wurde absichtlich trocken
und roh gehalten. Damit nähert man sich der musikalischen
Zielsetzung noch mehr an, die tief in den Siebzigern
verwurzelt ist. Bands wie DEEP PURPLE, WHITESNAKE oder
RAINBOW standen für Songs wie 'Set Me Free', 'Twisted',
'Colorado', 'Little Sister' oder 'Pretty Maureen'
definitiv Pate. Im weiteren Verlauf entdecken THE COTTON
SOETERBOEK BAND mit Songs wie 'Gold And Gray' und 'Still
Of The Night' ihre Liebe zum Southern Rock, der auch
Assoziationen zu LYNYRD SKYNYRD aufkommen lässt. Da stellt
man sich unweigerlich eine dreckige Bar an einem heißen
Abend mit viel Alkohol und Gästen mit Cowboyhüten
vor.
Die Musik
ist insgesamt sehr rudimentär. Auf große Überraschungen
verzichtet das Quintett gänzlich. Keiner der neun Songs
überschreitet die Vier-Minuten-Marke. Hier wird nichts
aufgebaut, vorbereitet oder ausgespielt, sondern man kommt
eher direkt zum Punkt. Dominiert wird die gesamte Musik
einerseits von Joost van den Broek mit seiner Hammondorgel
und andererseits dem bluesigen Organ Soertboeks, der
gesanglich an eine junge Version von David Coverdale
erinnert. Keine schlechte Referenz, wenn mir auch ein
bisschen das Feuer und die Dynamik fehlt. Dabei beweist
der junge Mann durchaus ein Gespür für Melodien, greift
aber zu oft auf Standards zurück. Auch die Attitüde wird
eher auf Sparflamme gefahren, so dass viele Passagen
gelangweilt oder austauschbar klingen. Sehr schade, denn
gesanglich wäre sicherlich mehr drin gewesen.
"Twisted"
ist sicherlich ein gutes Album geworden, das auf jeder
Rockparty als Hintergrundmusik wunderbar funktionieren
könnte. Wenn man sich jedoch näher damit befasst, schafft
kein Song den Sprung aus dem Standardtopf. Somit rauschen
die einunddreißig Minuten angenehm, aber ohne größere
Höhepunkte an einem vorbei. Trotzdem könnte die Scheibe im
Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten, auf den ellenlangen
Highways und mit Unterstützung der zahlreichen Rockradios
funktionieren. Für Europa wage ich die Prognose, dass
dieses Debütalbum von THE COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND nur
eingefleischte Old-School-Rockfans hinter dem Ofen
hervorlocken dürfte. Schade, hätte persönlich etwas mehr
erwartet.

Interesante banda quienes nos han
enviado su disco debut, originarios de Colorado Springs,
Colorado EEUU. Una agrupación con una serie de buenas
sorpresas. Primero deciros que la banda la forman el
carismático Alan Cotton en las guitarras, y en las voces
encontramos a nada menos que Robert Soeterboek (Ayreon,
Wicked Sensation), quién giró junto a Arjen Lucassen en su
proyecto Star One. Y se han hecho acompańar de
músicos de mucho prestigio y sobre todo experiencia en
bandas puntuales, tomar nota: en la batería Reynold
“Butch” Carlson (Driver, Rob Rock), el bajista Mike Davis
(Rob Haldford Band) y el teclista Joost Van Den Broek
(After Forever), quienes grabaron este disco debut
“Twisted”. Más tarde ingresarían a la banda ya de forma
oficial el bajista Wim Den Boer y el batería Wilfried
Broekman ya como miembros fijos de THE COTTON SOETERBOEK
BAND.
La banda práctica un
estilo Hard Rock muy moderno combinado con el Blues Rock
inglés de los ańos 70´s y la sensibilidad del Rock Sureńo.
Así que ya con esto os podéis preparar para un disco y
unos cortes, nueve en total, muy frescos, una bocanada de
buenos temas en la línea antes seńalada, fácil de digerir
y sumamente variados, siendo por lo tanto un trabajo
sumamente entretenido. Las voces claras y limpias, ańaden
un condimento extra que engancha al oyente.
Los temas de este disco
poseen además un extra ańadido y ese es, el buen “feeling”
que transmite, con el que consigue cautivarte a la
primera, las guitarras y ese estilo Hard Rock y la voz
limpia de Robert, son toda una delicia para el oyente. Los
solos son desgarradores, sin llegar a ser del todo
pesados, pero si envolventes. Son temas sencillos, en
cuanto a estructura, pero muy bien elaborados, y lo mejor
que enganchan a la primera, cada uno con su movida, pero
fáciles de seguir. Ejemplo de ello son “Set Me Free” o “
Twisted”, el cual da nombre al disco.
“Colorado”, vendría ha ser una semi
balada, medio tiempos y un coro muy pegadizo, muy
Americano. Pero es que su sonido lo es al 100 % y lo han
sabido matizar para que no resulte empalagoso. “Leave Me
Blue”, esta si es sin dudas la balada del disco, un corte
con unas guitarras limpias y una batería en plan blues,
que le otorga mayor presencia. “Little Sister”, vendría a
ser el tema rebelde, con unos riffs más rasgantes, y una
voz más seca y por lo tanto más agresiva, dentro de sus
parámetros claro, pero sin duda una canción entretenida,
perfecta para ir en el coche por esas carreteras perdidas
de Espańa y este corte de fondo, alucinante.
Y como no podía ser de
otra forma, nos faltaba el tema divertido, fiestero, en
esta ocasión “Still Of The Night”, con un piano muy acorde
a la espectación que crea esta canción. Muy en la onda
Whitesnake, por el sonido, no por que sea una versión
recalco. Pero el solo de piano, es genial.
Un disco en general muy positivo,
buenos riffs de guitarra y una voz sensacional que se
adapta a la perfección con su idea original. Hacia falta
este tipo de bandas y refrescar la memoria a todos los
amantes del buen Hard Rock Americano, una agrupación para
no dejar pasar y su tema final es perfecto para cerrar el
disco, “The Game”, con un Robert con una voz más oscura,
que le ha dado un vuelco total a la canción y que cierran
así de forma sensacional su disco de debut. No lo olvidéis
The Cotton Soeterboek, una banda a tomar en cuenta.

Aus den USA kam neulich ein Päckchen
an mit einer “Twisted” betitelten CD von der Cotton
Soeterboek Band. Komischer Name – was sind denn das für
Jungs? Nun, verdammt gute Hardrocker! Die in Colorado
beheimatete Band ist durch Southern Rock der Marke Lynyrd
Skynird beeinflusst und zählt auch britischen
Whitesnake/Deep Purple Hardrock zu ihren Faves. Aus diesen
Einflüssen stricken die Bandköpfe Alan Cotton (Gitarre)
und Robert Soeterboek (Vocals) ihre Songs. Dabei gelingt
es den beiden talentierten Musikern (Sänger Robert war
z.B. schon bei Ayreon aktiv) einen perfekten Mix zu
erzeugen und Songs zu kreieren die ein verdammt hohes
Qualitätslevel haben! Egal ob treibender Rocker („Little
Sister“) oder ruhiger, bluesiger wie in „Leave me Blue“ –
hier passt einfach alles. Hervorragende Gitarrenarbeit,
ein Sänger der David Coverdale (in jungen Jahren) mäßig
rüberkommt und eine wummernde Hammond Orgel die Uriah Heep
Feeling versprüht! Hier sind Könner am Werk, u.a. hat man
durch die Holland Connection des Sängers, Leute wie Joost
van den Broek (After Forever) an Bord und auch Mike Davis
(Rob Halford Band) und Reynold Carlson (Driver, Rob Rock)
halfen aus. 30 wirklich verdammt gute Hardrock Minuten hat
diese CD zu bieten. Für Freunde von alten ´70er Klängen
ala Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake,etc. ein Muss! Da

En estos días
en los que tantas alegrías y decepciones está causando el
"Chinese Democracy". Conviene alternar la escucha del
artefacto con otras sonoridades que han visto la luz en
este 2008 y que merecen la pena. Es el caso de "The
CottonSoeterboek band" una agradable sorpresa, esta banda
formada por Robert Soeterboek a la voz, Alan Cotton a la
guitarra, Reynold Carlson a la batería, Mike Davis al bajo
y en su importantísimo papel en el sonido de la banda al
órgano Joost Van den Broek. Siendo este otro de esos
discos candidatos a estar en la lista de los diez mejores
del ańo. Su única pega es que la banda no ha inventado
nada nuevo, pero lo que hacen lo hacen de manera
sobresaliente.
Nueve temas tiene este
álbum, donde personalmente encuentro un montón de
referencias al sonido Deep Purple quizás culpa de ese
órgano omnipreente en buena parte del disco, quizás la voz
que en algunos momentos me recuerda a David Coverdale y
muchas gotas de Southern Rock o sea un agradable olor a
Lynyrd Skynyrd recorriendo los bits.
Me encantan los nueve
temas que configuran este disco, desde la inicial "Set me
free" marcada a sangre y fuego por el órgano dominador
absoluto del tema, aunque la guitarra que mete Alan Cotton
no este nada mal. Mi canción favorita "Colorado" en estos
días que en varios blogs se está recordando a aquella
maravillosa banda llamada "Travelling Wilburys" este tema
me tiene un aire muy similar. Pero que nadie dejé de
esuchar canciones como la propia "Twisted" o "Still of the
night" con su piano y su coro adictivos.
En el Youtube sólo esta
colgada la canción "Gold and Gray" sólo con el audio, un
bonito tema en una onda un poco más clásica.

Für die Cotton
Soeterboek Band scheint die Zeit still gestanden zu sein.
Denn wie sonst sind die Sounds zu erklären, die einem hier
aus den Boxen entgegen schallen? Typische 70er Jahre
Sounds, ganz nah an Bands wie Free, Uriah Heep, Rainbow
und Deep Purple. Da die genannten Akteure entweder nicht
mehr existieren oder im Fall von Deep Purple leider nur
ein Schatten ihrer selbst sind, ist es umso erfreulicher,
dass die Sounds es auch in die heutige Zeit geschafft
haben. Schließt man die Augen, kann man sich Deep Purple
geradezu förmlich vorstellen, wie sie eines ihrer
begnadeten Konzerte geben, nur eben mit einem anderen
Sänger. Der hört auf den Namen Robert Soeterboek, stammt
aus den Niederlanden und hat bereits mit
Multiinstrumentalist Arjen „Ayreon“ Lucassen zusammen
gearbeitet. Die Stimme passt hervorragend zu den Songs und
vermag ihnen das zusätzliche gewisse Etwas zu geben.
Gitarrist und Gründer Alan Cotton scheint ohnehin eine
Schwäche für unsere Nachbarn zu haben, denn auch an den
Keyboards befindet sich mit Joost van den Broek ein
weiterer Niederländer, der durch sein an Jon Lord
erinnerndes Spiel ebenso deutlich zum Gelingen der Songs
beiträgt. Selbst Whitesnake mag man in Songs wie „Still Of
The Night“ oder „The Game“ heraushören. Schwierig wird es
dann jedoch hier einzelne Songs hervorzuheben, denn alle
Songs sind auf ähnlich hohem Niveau. Vielleicht kann das
getragene „Colorado“ als Gradmesser für den Rest der Songs
stehen, denn mit seinem trockenen Sound und dem
eingängigen Chorus hat er eindeutigen Ohrwurmcharakter und
hätte in damaligen Zeiten das Zeug zum Hit gehabt.
Lediglich das Gitarrenriff bei „Little Sister“ kommt einem
von den Scorpions („Loving You Sunday Morning“) leidlich
bekannt vor. Wer also nicht nur die Originale hören
möchte, sich aber dennoch nicht allzu weit von den seligen
70ern entfernen möchte, kann hier ein Kleinod vorfinden.
Abzüge gibt es aber dennoch, denn mit gerade einmal knapp
dreißig Minuten Laufzeit ist das Album eindeutig zu kurz
ausgefallen.

Finally, after a long wait
the The Cotton Soeterboek Band has released it’s debut
full album, Twisted.
While there are echoes of the past in
their music, their fluid musicality recalls Deep Purple,
they also have an honesty often associated with bands like
Lynyrd Skynyrd - it merely acts as a foundation for their
music. They sound as earthy and raw as the Black Crowes,
and as hard and bluesy as classic Whitesnake, yet there’s
a higher level of musicianship to their performances and
songwriting that makes them like no one else.
The band consists of
Robert Soeterboek on vocals, a relatively young but
incredibly soulful singer very much in the David Coverdale
/ Jorn Lande mold. His previous work includes Wicked
Sensation and Ayreon.
As a young teen, Robert
honed his skills, playing in bands such as Tempter and
Vulture. Robert later went on to play with Bodine, My
Brother Jake and has appeared on six Ayreon albums
including Arjen A. Lucassen’s Star One-Live on Earth DVD,
as well as Wicked Sensation’s debut album Reflected.His
unique, classic rock voice gives the Cotton Soeterboek
Band it’s distinct and immediately recognizable sound.
Ranging from hard rock classics to soulful ballads, his
vocal range and style really grabs a hold of you. He has
earned the respect of both audiences and critics
alike.
Alan Cotton a seasoned blues rock
guitarist who has played with Mark Boals (Yngwie
Malmsteen), Drummer Doane Perry (Jethro Tull) and Bassist
Matt Bissonette (David Lee Roth), and also as assistant
producer for Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart and 3rd
Matinee.
Well constructed songs
and top notch musicianship have always been constants in
Alan’s previous work and continue in the Cotton Soeterboek
Band. The band features a refreshing stripped down
blues-rock sound, cutting against the grain of polished

Hace largo tiempo que esperaba
noticias sobre la nueva banda de este gran
vocalista de origen holandés, el seńor Robert Soeterboek,
que tras participar hace varios ańos atrás en Ayreon y el
2002 con los germanos (ya desaparecidos) de Wicked
Sensation en ese incréible álbum llamado “Reflected”, se
hacía necesario escucharlo en algún nuevo proyecto
demostrando todo ese potencial que su registro vocal
encierra, aunque tengamos que pasar por alto su notable
influencia y similitud con el excelso David Coverdale.
Aunque para aclarar los puntos, no es que sea el proyecto
en solitario de este tipo, sino que además la banda la
conforman otro puńado de buenos músicos como Allan Cotton,
guitarrista principal de la banda junto también a Wim den
Boer al bajo y Wilfried Broekman tras los
parches.
Aún sigo pensando que
de hacer carrera más en Europa que en los US, quizás
Robert hoy sería tan o más popular que el noruego Jorn
Lande, otro gran vocalista de nuestros días, con un
sinnúmero de proyectos y bandas en las que ha participado,
y que para el caso del primero tras salir de Wicked
Sensation, se perdió bastante tiempo de la escena hasta
que formó junto a Allan esta banda que por lo demás tiene
un fuerte rollo rockero de corte clásico, que hará las
delicias de todos aquellos seguidores de rock blusero de
los setentas y porque no también de aquellos que gusten de
aquellos sonidos más sureńos del rock americano. Y es que
ese fuerte olorcillo zeppeliano o incluso algo Whitesnake
de sus primeros trabajos se siente en todo este “Twisted”,
esto último quizás debido al gran parecido vocal entre
Soeterboek y Coverdale, aunque algo más grave el registro
del primero.
Hechas las
presentaciones de rigor, este trabajo se inicia con un
rockerísimo medio tiempo (la tónica de todos modos para
este disco) “Set me free” con un riff totalmente
Whitesnake, con acompańamiento de hammond en los coros y
esa envolvente y cálida voz de Robert marcando presencia
desde el primer minuto. “Pretty Maureen” es la siguiente,
con unas guitarras entrecortadas y con una interpretación
mucho más pausada y relajada, sorprendiendo gratamente a
moros y cristianos a esta altura.
El tema título
“Twisted” es zeppeliano total, mucho más ralentizado y con
un coro de esos pegotes a más no poder, gran corte por
cierto. El baladesco “Colorado” (haciendo alusión a la
locación donde esta banda se formó) es un gran exponente
dentro de su género, algo más Aor para mi gusto, suaves e
inspiradas notas coronan este gran corte, que es seguido
del mismo modo, aunque con un aire mucho más southern con
“Leave me blue”, que como se podrán imaginar suena a blues
por los cuatro costados, siendo de esos temas perfectos
para en una noche de pasión dedicárselo a alguien
especial. De seguro que no falla.
“Little Sister” una vez
más repite la efectiva fórmula de rock a medio tiempo de
coros clásicos con otra buenas dosis de riffs a cargo de
Allan Coton. “Gold and Gray sin embargo es un tema que en
sus inicios tiene un aire más Rolling Stones (“Like a
Rolling Stone” la recuerdan?? Ahora la recordarán más,
je,je) aunque con la coverdeliana voz de Robert bordándolo
todo.
Contrariamente a lo
primero que podría pensarse “Still of the Night” no es un
cover a Whitesnake,sino que nuevamente un tema más blusero
con buen acompańamiento de piano y hammond en el fondo. El
noveno y final “The Game” es en definitiva el cierre para
este entretenido álbum, con un rollo más ochentas en su
desarrollo, quizás incluso tirando para el lado de unos
Scorpions ochenteros, un tema rockero de muy buen gusto y
gancho por cierto. En definitiva nos quedamos aquí con un
muy buen disco de rock and roll de corte clásico que por
ahí quizás tan solo peque de quedarse corto en la
conclusión de algunas ideas, pareciendo que algunas
canciones podrían terminar mejor de cómo quedaron, pero
nada, eso es sólo una apreciación personal que no enloda
para nada el sólido trabajo de esta nueva banda de rock

Se qualcuno all’inizio del nuovo
millennio, mi avesse domandato il nome di un paio di
singer poco noti, di grande talento e dal futuro
assicurato, non avrei avuto molti dubbi.
Il norvegese
Jorn Lande, all’epoca alle prese con il sorprendente
debutto degli Ark (un gruppo, diciamoci la veritŕ,
rimpianto a lungo) e Robert Soeterboek , cantante
originario di Rotterdam, Olanda, spesso coinvolto nei
sempre grandiosi album di Arjen “Ayreon” Lucassen, (Star
One in particolare).
Come le cose siano poi andate, č
sotto gl’occhi di tutti . Lande ad oggi, puň essere
considerato uno dei top frontman dell’universo hard rock,
mentre di Soeterboek, dopo un piů che valido album
realizzato con i poco noti Wicked Sensation nel 2001, si
erano purtroppo perse le tracce, scomparso dalle scene ed
annegato tra i flutti di un successo mai
decollato.
Chi non muore si
rivede, dice l’arcinoto proverbio. Ma soprattutto, se il
talento č vero e tangibile, sarebbe un vero peccato
lasciarlo inespresso.
Ed č cosě
che, dopo un lungo periodo di silenzio, trascorso a
rincorrere questioni familiari e collaborazioni piů o meno
gratificanti, i tempi per un ritorno si sono finalmente
resi maturi grazie all’assist offerto da Alan Cotton,
chitarrista statunitense altrettanto sconosciuto al grande
pubblico ma, in ugual misura, desideroso di creare
qualcosa d’interessante e competitivo in ambito hard
rock.
La
scelta di affidarsi a sonoritŕ leggendarie come quelle dei
calorosi seventies, tributando il giusto omaggio alla
grandezza di fonti d’ispirazione uniche ed inconfondibili
come Deep Purple e Whitesnake, č apparsa, dato il
background dei due artisti, sin da subito ideale,
agevolata da una passione comune e da una voce come quella
di Soeterboek, calda, sicura e potente, quasi come quella
del grande David Coverdale.
Gli adoratori dell’era musicale
descritta poc’anzi farebbero bene a drizzare le antenne
dunque. Se č rock alla maniera dei primi Whitesnake quello
che gradite particolarmente, non ci sarŕ da stupirsi se
“Twisted” dovesse divenire, in breve, uno dei vostri
compagni d’avventure preferiti.
Gli indizi, infatti, portano tutti
nella medesima direzione.
L’incedere cadenzato delle piacevoli
“Set Me Free”, “Twisted”,”Leave Me Blue”, “Little Sister”
(best track del cd) e “Pretty Maureeen”, parlano chiaro e
non lasciano dubbi. Hammond in primo piano (giostrato con
perizia da Joost Van Den Broek, altra vecchia conoscenza
dei fan di Ayreon e After Forever), chitarre roventi e
vocals impeccabili, riconducono senza possibilitŕ d’errore
ai tempi in cui Bernie Marsden e Micky Moody erano parte
vitale del Serpente Bianco, in album divenuti classici
come “Lovehunter” e “Trouble”.
Blues fuso indissolubilmente con
ottimo rock d’annata, in una miscela di pregevole valore
che affascina ed ammalia, pur nella propria evidente
mancanza d’originalitŕ, grazie alla bravura dei due leader
(bravo Soeterboek, ma ugualmente encomiabile Cotton) e ad
una formula stilistica che piace sempre e a distanza di
decenni, non stanca mai.
Rimarchevoli poi, le inflessioni
sudiste di “Colorado”, “Gold And Gray” e “Still Of The
Night” (non una cover, a dispetto di quanto sospettabile),
passaggi in cui l’ombra dei titanici Lynyrd Skyrd č piů di
una semplice sensazione e dove il ritmo tende ad elevarsi
notevolmente, alla ricerca di atmosfere un po’ rurali e
“rustiche”, mutuate probabilmente dalle ambientazioni in
cui Cotton e Soeterboek hanno concepito il disco, una
capanna sperduta nel bel mezzo delle montagne rocciose.
Il pezzo di
hard rock vero e proprio giunge invece nel finale con “The
Game”, ultima pedina di una tracklist risicata nei numeri,
ma notevole in termini di qualitŕ e piacere
d’ascolto.
Pochi indugi dunque.
“Twisted” sembra davvero un buon prodotto, suonato con
classe ed interpretato ancora meglio da una coppia di
musicisti pronti per palcoscenici di alto lignaggio.
Se il genere
vi piace e l’idea di ascoltare qualcosa che, comunque, di
nuovo non dice proprio nulla, dategli una chance. La
scoperta si rivelerŕ interessante.

The Cotton Soeterboek Band tire son
nom de deux de ses membres, le chanteur Robert Soeterboek
et le guitariste Alan Cotton. Robert Soeterboek est un
chanteur hollandais connu, ayant entre autres participé ŕ
quelques albums du catalogue de Arjen Lucassen « Ayreon »
et ŕ deux de ses tournées, celle de Star One en 2003 et
celle de Stream of Passion en Scandinavie en 2007. Alan
Cotton est un guitariste américain influencé par Jimmy
Page, Gary Moore, Duane Allman et Ronnie Montrose et a
collaboré entre autres avec le bassiste Matt Bissonette,
délivrant un jeu de guitare hard rock trčs bluesy et
arborant un look trčs « sudiste » ŕ la Allman Brothers ou
Lynyrd Skynyrd. « Twisted » a d’ailleurs été masterisé par
Rodney Mills qui a travaillé avec les deux célčbres
groupes sudistes précités.
D’emblée, la voix de
Soeterboek fait mouche et rappelle instantanément et sans
ambages celle de David Coverdale. Soeterbboek chante avec
beaucoup de feeling et sa voix grave gorgée de « soul »
convient parfaitement au hard rock blues proposé par le
groupe. Le jeu de guitare de Cotton est parfait pour le
genre, bien plus proche de celui d’un Billy Gibbons (ZZ
Top) que de celui de Michael Romeo de Symphony X. La
section rythmique, Mike Davis (Rob Halford Band) ŕ la
basse et Reynold Carlson (Driver, Rob Cock) ŕ la batterie,
soutient solidement le chanteur et le guitariste. Le jeune
prodige hollandais, Joost Van den Broeck (After Forever)
tient les parties de claviers, impeccablement comme ŕ son
habitude. Depuis la réalisation de « Twisted », ce sont
Wim Van den Boer, bassiste, et Wilfried Broekman, batteur,
qui ont officiellement rejoint le groupe aux côtés de
Cotton et Soeterboek.
Le hard rock groovy de
The Cotton Soeterboek band est un mélange de rock blues
anglais des seventies et rock américain sudiste façon
Lynyrd Skynyrd, qui devrait plaire aux admirateurs de
Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Black Crowes, Bad Company et
autres Lynyrd Skynyrd. « Set me free », édité en single,
ouvre l’album avec une ambition affichée de devenir un
hit, présentant des airs de parenté avec les Deep Purple
et Uriah Heep des early seventies. « Pretty Maureen »,
écrit par Soeterboek en hommage ŕ sa femme, et « Colorado
» sont plus bluesy hard. « Twisted », avec de la slide
guitare, est un titre trčs hard rock seventies. « Leave me
blue » et « Gold and Gray » réveillent des réminiscences
sudistes. « Little sister » cousine ŕ nouveau avec Deep
Purple et « The game » clôt cet album avec un mélodie
forte, un des meilleurs titres de « Twisted
».
The Cotton Soeterboek
Band est donc un groupe convaincant, constitué de bons
musiciens, et possédant surtout un chanteur avec une voix
exceptionnelle. Soeterboek y est véritablement impérial,
se posant en challenger sérieux de Jorn Lande. Des
compositions qui tiennent la route et qui accrochent avec
des mélodies instantanées et fortes, un son en adéquation
parfaite avec le style joué, et les claviers de Joost Van
den Broeck donnent ŕ l’ensemble une couleur
parfaite.
On peut toutefois
regretter des compositions trop linéaires, toutes
séquencées sur la męme structure, avec une durée
respective entre 3'02 et 3'51, l’album totalisant quelques
31 minutes, ce qui est peu, alors męme que d’autres
offrent parfois jusqu’ŕ plus de 60 minutes de musique par
CD. Cela sous-entend aussi que les soli de guitare sont
économes, ceux de claviers étant rares (« Gold and gray »,
« Still of the night »), ce qui peut induire une
différence pour les fans de Deep Purple ou de Whitesnake
par exemple, ceux-ci appréciant les envolées
guitaristiques et « claviéristiques » des Blackmore et
Lord, et de leurs successeurs.
Un bon album de hard
rock bluesy teinté de soul donc, assez mélodique et avec
des refrains accrocheurs, le seul bémol étant qu’il soit
trop peu varié et linéaire. Les fans de classic rock et
amateurs de Coverdale et Whistesnake, Bad Company, Lynyrd
Synyrd et autres Black Crowes aimeront sans aucun doute ce
disciple, qui montre beaucoup de savoir faire en la
matičre.

The Cotton Soeterboek Band mixes
Southern rock (think Lynyrd Skynyrd) with 1970s bluesy
British metal (think Deep Purple and early Whitesnake)
with great results. The musicianship is tight and
Robert Soeterboek’s vocals are powerful and soulful
and often, they remind of David Coverdale.
“Set Me Free” could
have just as easily been a Deep Purple song and is a great
way to open the album. I know a song is good when it gets
stuck in my head and I found myself, over the past few
days, humming this song despite not having listened to the
album in days. I find “The Game” has the same effect on
me.
“Colorado” is probably
my favorite track though, very catchy and this is where
Robert sounds like Coverdale the most.
All told, if you’re a
fan of Deep Purple, Southern rock or early Whitesnake,
this is definitely a band worth checking out. The songs
are strong, catchy and very refreshing to hear in this age
of doom & gloom hard rock & metal. This album is
good time rock ‘n’ roll and that’s all a person ever
really needs.

A brand new band from America with a
lot of experience, great sound and performance on good old
rock. Alan Cotton is on the guitars, who is well known in
the American music circuit from his session recordings
with many bands and musicians and has left the speed for
simple, soulful playing (something unusual in our days,
when everybody tries to prove that he plays faster all the
arpeggios and scales), while on the vocals we meet Robert
Soeterboek (Ayreon, Wicked Sensation) who inspires the
experience and warmth of a real rocker. The band
approaches the 70’s rock feeling and reconciles it with
the sound of today, preserving this sensation of the
70’s.
Wonderful compositions
that will take you away to Deep Purple and Whitesnake good
old times, in the mid and late 70’s. Beginning with “Set
Me Free” and “Pretty Maureen”, the band gives us a hint of
what will follow. “Twisted” is the kind of song that I
haven’t heard since the days of Gallagher and Purple, so
emotional on both vocals and guitars. The rhythm section
is as tight as it should be and the keys sound totally
proper. “Colorado” is a more Whitesnake-like song. Alan
again shows his experience with this simple yet soulful
guitar solo. The next tracks “Leave Me Blue”, “Little
Sister” and “Gold And Gray” move on to a more southern
rock sound, that will bring you to mind Lynyrd Skynyrd.
During the closing tracks “Still Of The Night” and “The
Game”, we find ourselves enjoying the album with a
cigarette and a glass of Jack Daniels on the rocks and
believe me, there’s no way you won’t ask for
more...
This album is, as
guitarist Alan Cotton says, made to take us all back to
the times when music was priority and destined to help you
chill out and enjoy the moment and life itself. This is a
must buy cd for all of you who can’t get enough of those
great times…Rock On…

Che sia un album ben scritto, ben
suonato, ben prodotto – in sola una parola: professionale
– godibile ed in grado di far trascorrere il tempo in
maniera divertente, su questo non ci piove, ma non č
tutt’oro quello che luce.
Il fatto č che “Twisted”, pur
possedendo tutte le qualitŕ che ho appena elencato, e
godibile si, ma a patto che dimentichiate di botto che
siano mai esistiti Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Lynyrd
Skynyrd, Huriah Heep ed una carrettata di altri storici
gruppi del genere.
Fin dall’opener l’eco dei Deep Purple
– magari di metŕ anni 80, č questa č la nota piů moderna
dell’album - echeggia limpido da tutte le note, ed andando
avanti i rimandi a quanto fatto dai grandi dell’HR
mondiale sono continui, da notare anche parecchie
citazione Southern, funky, e persino dei non velati
riferimenti ai songwriters americani dei middle 70’s.
Quello che č
senza dubbio apprezzabile č l’amalgama tra il chitarrista
Cotton ed il Singer Soeterboek, i quali, oltre a
trasportare all’interno di “Twisted” quanto appreso dalle
loro innumerevoli precedenti esperienze, (Ayreon, Halford,
After Forever tra le altre), fanno di tutto per risultare
pienamente nell’HR mood di “Twisted”, con ciň relegando il
duo ritmico al ruolo di mera, ma dignitosa comparsa.
Non c’č
nulla che effettivamente non vada in questo lavoro e se
volete qualcosa che vi tenga compagnia ad esempio durante
uno spostamento in autostrada, o in coda mentre tornate
dal lavoro o semplicemente a casa vostra per rilassarvi,
“Twisted” sembra essere stato risucchiato qui direttamente
dai primi anni 70 – raffinatezze di produzione a parte,
ovvio – ma il punto č proprio questo, i primi anni 70 sono
passati da un pezzo, e molta acqua č passata sotto tutti i
ponti, tranne che sotto quello da cui sono affacciati i
nostri.
In questo non c’č nulla di male in
sé, intendiamoci, ma l’acquisto di “Twisted” deve essere
subordinato al fatto di essere a conoscenza della totale,
assoluta assenza di qualsiasi cosa sia accaduta dopo il
periodo prima citato, se a voi sta bene allora…….
Per ciň che mi riguarda lo
considererei un grande disco se fosse uscito 35 anni fa,
ma č uscito nel 2008, ed allora….

TwistedDe kern van The Cotton Soeterboek Band wordt
gevormd door de Amerikaanse gitarist Alan Cotton en de
Nederlandse zanger Robert Soeterboek, vooral bekend van
zijn zang bij Ayreon en Star One. De tweede Nederlander
met inbreng op dit album - helaas niet als vast bandlid -
is Joost van den Broek (After Forever). Bas en drums
worden hier verzorgd door ervaren sessiekrachten, maar
inmiddels zijn Wim den Boer en Wilfried Broekman tot de
band toegetreden. Op dit album wordt een zwaar
bluesgeörienteerde vorm van classic rock neergelegd,
ergens tussen southern rock en bands als Deep Purple en
vooral Whitesnake. De stem van Soeterboek draagt flink bij
aan dat laatste, want hij klinkt vaak als David Coverdale
in de jaren dat die de noten nog niet zijn keel uit hoefde
te knijpen. Omdat de toetsen van Joost van den Broek
bepaald niet naar de achtergrond worden weggedrukt houdt
het geheel een mooie balans. Het wordt nog een klus om
voor de live-optredens een goede vervanger te vinden. Toch
is er nog wel iets op dit album aan te merken: gitarist
Alan Cotton lijkt wat moeite te hebben het geluid te
vullen. Cotton is een uitstekende gitarist, maar lijkt
vooral een man voor fraaie slagpartijen en minder voor
gierende solo's. Hij kan het wel ("Twisted"), maar het
lijkt niet zijn hobby. Het kan deels liggen aan de
productie, maar ik denk dat een tweede gitarist live hard
nodig zal zijn. Ik zal het maar houden op gebrek aan tijd
en geld bij een eerste productie, waardoor die weliswaar
tot in de puntjes verzorgd is, maar hier en daar net dat
beetje testosteron mist. Niettemin kunnen ze trots zijn op
wat hiermee wordt neergezet. Ze vinden het genre niet
opnieuw uit, maar o wat klinkt het lekker.

music they like. Despite the European pedigree, actually
an American based outfit. They take pride in the fact
they’re a blues based hard rock outfit with keyboards
circa 70s Deep Purple. Actually, only the opening ‘Set Me
Free’ (not a Sweet cover) lives up to the billing of
Blackmore & Co, although there are elements, like
guitar solos and Hammond organ throughout these nine
originals. ‘Leave Me Blue’ has a decided Southern Rock
flavor, a style that hasn’t had a new outfit in decades!
Ditto the slow, Southern drawl of ‘Little Sister’. There’s
plenty of Hammond and electric piano on ‘Still of The
Night’ (not a Whitesnake cover).

Un beau matin de novembre j’ouvre ma
boite aux lettres et me trouve nez ŕ nez avec une
enveloppe toute jolie, venant tout droit des Etats-Unis.
Ma premičre réaction a été de m’attendre ŕ recevoir une
auto-production. Le temps de rentrer chez moi, j’ouvre
l’enveloppe et me rend compte que non, c’est bel et bien
un album en version définitive, avec un pe tit mot
ŕ mon attention d’un certain Alan Cotton.
Ma curiosité
étant bien grande je me jette immédiatement sur la
biographie jointe et lŕ grande surprise : les musiciens
faisant partis de ce groupe. A savoir : Reynold « Butch »
Carlson (Driver, Rob Rock), Mike Davis (Rob Halford),
Joost Van Den Broek (After Forever), et bien évidemment
Robert Soeterboek et Alan Cotton.
Il est écrit
dans la biographie que les fans de Deep Purple et de
Whitesnake version années 70 ne seront pas déçus. Aussi,
le cd se mit ŕ tourner comme par magie dans ma
platine.
Comment dire
; et bien j’ai pris une grosse baffe immédiatement. Le son
se trouve ętre monstrueux, clair et glissant, tout en
gardant cet esprit un peu roots qu’il y avait dans les
années 70. La seconde chose qui marque est le son du
synthé : entre ambiance gospel et musique planante donnant
une ambiance presque pastorale ŕ la musique. A noter aussi
ce putain de timbre qu’ŕ Robert au niveau du chant. Une
voix posée, bien masculine qui donne une dimension bien
rock mais tout en préservant ce côté généreux et donneur
de la musique.
On sent que
les musiciens ont décidés de se faire plaisir sur cet
album, donnant le meilleur d’eux męme, nous offrants des
morceaux ŕ cśurs ouverts. On pourra y trouver tous les
styles : du hard rock bluesy de Whitesnake aux morceaux
ambiants de Deep Purple en passant par des mélodies
marquantes nous rappelant qu’ŕ travers la musique nous
pouvons ressentir et donner tout un tas de choses. Je ne
suis pas vraiment croyant au niveau religieux mais je
crois au pouvoir de la musique, qui a ce côté
unificateur.
Ici, c’est
bel et bien le cas : tout le monde s’y retrouvera. Les
fans de hard et de metal tout comme les plus jeunes ou
encore les personnes acidues ŕ cette fabuleuse période
musicale du hard rock des années 70. Quoi qu’il en soit il
faudra dorénavant noter qu’au Colorado il n’y a pas que
des Coyotes, ils y a aussi de supers musiciens qui
prennent le temps de composer et d’offrir de trčs belles
chansons, et aussi qui prennent le temps de contacter les
webzines directement.
Petit repproche car il en faut un :
l’album est un peu court (env 35 – 40min) malgrčs ses 9
titres. Mais quel bonheur.

Lucassen nel progetto Ayreon č alla base di questo disco
piacevole e ottimamente prodotto da Robert Salvaggio
(Creed, Jewel). La band metŕ americana e metŕ europea non
inventa niente ma il suo hard rock vigoroso a tinte
southern e british č di grande efficacia. Tanta č
l'influenza di gruppi quali Lynryd Skynyrd, Deep Purple e
Whitesnake nella loro musica quanto elevata la capacitŕ di
rimanere in testa delle loro melodie. Accanto ai due
troviamo una sezione ritmica di rilievo formata dal
batterista Reynold Carlson (Rob Rock) e Mike Davis
(Halford) che permette alle canzoni di non scivolare mai
nella prolissitŕ anche quando la 'derivazione' va ad
accentuarsi (vedi 'Leave Me Blue' con le note del piano
che richiamano in maniera assillante il tocco di Billy
Powell). 'Pretty Maureen' e 'Little Sister' i brani da cui
partire per ricercare una personalitŕ piů forte.

En écoutant cet album,
confortablement installé dans notre année 2008, la
premičre remarque qui s’impose ŕ l’auditeur désorienté est
: « mais d’oů ça sort, ça ? ». En effet, bien que The
Cotton Soeterboek Band ne soit formé que depuis 2006 par
Alan Cotton et Robert Soeterboek (ça ne s’invente pas…),
et que ce dernier ait collaboré avec le trčs moderne Arjen
Lucassen, cet album est une agréable parenthčse vers les
années 70.
Dčs l’introduction d’un
"Set Me Free" entrainant, une myriade de références nous
vient ŕ l’esprit, tel que l’emblématique Deep Purple ou
encore Uriah Heep pour la complémentarité entre guitare et
synthétiseurs, créant un véritable mur de swing et de
groove, mais aussi les poussiéreux Lynyrd Skynyrd, avec
des ambiances renvoyant au southern rock. Le chant trčs
mélodique insuffle par exemple un coté bluesy qui marquera
tout l’album, mais qui sera aussi astucieusement
contrebalancé par des riffs aux sonorités hard ("Still Of
The Night"). Quelques couleurs sont apportées par
l’utilisation de claviers et piano distillée sur l’album.
Le fil conducteur est sans conteste l’ambiance, ce qui
exclue naturellement toute volonté de démonstration
instrumentale, mais les protagonistes ne sont pas pour
autant manchots, comme en témoignent les soli d’orgue
("Gold and Gray") et de guitare ("Twisted").
Alors bien entendu,
pour l’originalité de la musique, il faudra repasser.
Certes, l’auditeur évolue en terrain connu, mais cela va
parfois jusqu'ŕ une certaine impression de déjŕ entendu
(le riff de "Set Me Free", entendu chez Purple, certains
refrains entendus chez Whitesnake). Le minimalisme pourra
ainsi ennuyer avec un nombre de soli, breaks et autre
éléments qui rendent une écoute plus vivante réduits ici
au minimum syndical, ce qui a pour conséquence une écoute
prolongée un peu lassante. Cependant le but de cet album
est-il l’originalité et la démonstration ? Il semblerait
plutôt qu’il s’agisse ici de se rapprocher au maximum de
l’esprit seventies. Cet objectif est largement rempli et
amčne un coup de jeune ŕ cette musique, avec une
production dynamique.
Quoi qu’il en soit,
personne ne pourra nier le soin apporté au travail et ŕ
l’authenticité du tout. Les amoureux des années visées et
des groupes cités seront sans conteste séduits. Une telle
démarche avait trouvé des amateurs pour des groupes comme
Presto Ballet, et si l’ambiance est ici plus proche d’un
hard blues sympathique, The Cotton Soeterboek Band mérite
que l’on reconnaisse la qualité de son travail.

Procedentes de Colorado, con un
nombre largo haciendo referencia a sus dos líderes, y con
mucha clase, encontramos una pequeńa joyita que su
cantante nos ha hecho llegar directamente desde
tierras americanas.
THE COTTON SOETERBOEK
BAND es el proyecto de dos músicos geniales como el
cantante Robert Soeterboek y el guitarrista Alan Cotton,
quienes decidieron dar forma a su nivel musical aunándolo
en una formación sin desperdicio para ofrecer un compendio
de estilos que ellos manejan a la perfección con el Rock
clásico como premisa en todas sus canciones.
“Twisted” es su nuevo
legado, y en el nos dejan con la boca abierta a base de
buen rock, esencia sureńa en algún momento, sonido de los
70 y 80, una voz trabajada, que en muchas ocasiones
recuerda a Coverdale, Hard Rock y vena inglesa se aúnan
para dar de lleno con la pócima para aquellos degustadores
de bandas clásicas que a día de hoy siguen siendo
referente para todos.
En “Twisted”
encontramos nueve atractivos temas, donde como decía, la
variedad y el toque de estilos hacen que estemos ante una
obra a descubrir. Dos músicos geniales que dan de sí unas
canciones realmente exquisitas, disfrutando desde un
comienzo a lo WHITESNAKE perfecto, en todos los sentidos,
voz, guitarras y melodías, “Set Me Free”. El aire inglés y
el teclado clásico lo depuran en “Pretty Maureen”, para
reivindicar por qué “Twisted” da título al disco, siendo
un corte muy a lo DEEP PURPLE, vena puramente clásica,
desbordante de clase. En “Colorado” nos llenamos de
emoción con un Rock de melodía nuevamente al estilo
Coverdale, medio tiempo de estribillo genial, y el grupo
rompe moldes con un sureńo “Leave Me Blue”, con un regusto
a LYNYRD SKYNYRD sencillamente eficaz. El Rock de bar de
“Gold And Gray” más al estilo del Boss o el tema final
“The Game” te dejan una babilla en la boca pocas veces tan
agradable.
Sorpresa mayúscula la
de la banda de Cotton y Soeterboek, dos mentes
clásicamente maestras, quienes nos ofrecen un compendio de
estilos derivados del Rock más clásico, que a nadie puede
dejar insatisfecho. Mucha clase.

a stelle e strisce nato dalle menti del chitarrista Alan
Cotton e del cantante Robert Soeterboek (Ayreon): il
songwriting della band poggia le basi nel classico hard
rock settantiano pompato con iniezioni di blues e southern
rock, il tutto riletto in chiave moderna. Il risultato lo
trovate nelle nove tracce di 'Twisted', cd decisamente
curato e dotato di una corposa carica di sano
rock.
Le varie composizioni
risultano abbastanza distanti fra loro, come se ci
trovassimo di fronte ad uno scatolone che contiene oggetti
molto diversi tra loro: questo č sicuramente un pregio,
perchč evita all'ascoltatore di ascoltare pezzi tutti
simili fra loro.
La durata del disco č
molto bassa, visto che bastano poco piů di trenta minuti
per presentarci tutte le songs: se da un lato la durata
bassa scongiura il fattore noia, permettendo di procedere
a ripetuti ascolti, dall'altro mi sarebbe piaciuto avere
fra le mani piů materiale da valutare.
La produzione č molto
buona cosě come il booklet , ben curato nella sua
semplicitŕ e facilitŕ di lettura: in definitiva 'Twisted'
č un buon concentrato di hard rock che potrebbe
interessare ai patiti del genere vogliosi di provare a
scoprire novitŕ interessanti.

The Cotton Soeterboek
Band, cela ne vous parle pas forcement…mais ce groupe du
Colorado a vraiment envie d’en découdre puisqu’ils
démarchent la France (et notre webzine) pour se faire
connaitre et se faire apprécier. Un gros travail
d’investissement ŕ travers le monde, qui risque fort de
payer, vu que la qualité est bien lŕ et qu’il est tout
bonnement impensable de passer ŕ coté d’un tel groupe. Et
c’est avec le chanteur hollandais Robert Soeterboek
(Ayreon, Wicked Sensation) et le guitariste Alan Cotton
que le groupe est né en 2006, il est important de
souligner la date de création du groupe, vu le style de
musique présenté ici.
Avec ce tout premier album « Twisted
», qui va forcement ętre signé par une trčs grosse major
dans les mois ŕ venir (je ne vois pas d’autres issues), le
devenu quatuor passe en revue la base fondamentale du hard
rock, ŕ savoir un big rock des années 70/80, au temps oů
Deep purple soignait ses gros orgues en arričre plan et oů
Whitesnake possédait un chanteur d’exception. Ici,
nous voila replongé ŕ 100% dans le hard rock d’antan,
celui qui fait taper du pied, hocher la tčte, et poser son
coude sur la portičre en conduisant sa belle Cadillac le
long de la plage de Miami. C’est bien simple, le chanteur
ressemble trčs fortement ŕ David Coverdale, et « Twisted »
aurait trčs bien pu ętre l’album qui suit le formidable «
Page Coverdale » de 1993. Rempli de feeling, de groovy et
surtout de bluesy, cet album n’oublie rien de ses racines
profondes, avec talent et brio. Vous aurez droit ŕ des
titres plus slows US mais aussi et surtout des titres rock
blues, et des « tubes » comme leur single « Set me free
».
Une voix d’exception, une
guitariste qui met du feeling dans chaque note, un synthé
/orgue qui rappelle sans cesse le son 70’s, bref, vous
l’aurez compris, une pure merveille pour tous les amateurs
du genre (et vu que le revival hard rock bat son plein,
profitez en !).
Le seul souci restera
leur nom pas forcement mémorisable, mais une chose est
certaine : mettez le cd dans votre lecteur, vous sentirez
les Amériques, un hard rock qui sent bon les vastes
prairies et les grandes étendues gorgées de simplicité et
de légčreté. Un voyage inoubliable…

żUna banda holandesa haciendo rock
sureńo?. żQué es esto?. Sin embargo es cierto, la unión
del cantante Robert Soeterboek (Ayreon y Wicked
Sensation), y el violero Alan Cotton, dev enida en
The Cotton Soeterboek Band es ni más ni menos que un
impecable homenaje al rock americano desde la Venecia del
norte. En poco más de media hora, y a lo largo de sus
nueve tracks, Twisted nos regala una excelente dosis del
mejor rock sureńo ala Lynyrd Skynyrd o 38 Special, y del
clásico hard rock de Whitesnake. Pero como para todo
existe una explicación, el disco fue producido por Robert
Salvaggio (Creed y Jewel), y mezclado por una institución
como Rodney Mills, quien trabajó con las mejores
agrupaciones del rock sureńo.
El álbum
abre bien arriba con la Purple, Set Me Free, de lo más
hard rock de todo el CD; para luego dar paso a la sureńa
Pretty Maureen (temazo), consolidando el estilo con
venideras como Colorado, la country folk Leave Me Blue,
Gold and Gray, Still of the Night (de lo mejor de toda la
placa), y con el cierre The Game de pegadizo
estribillo.
Las
vinculadas directamente con la agrupación de David
Coverdale son las buenas de Twisted, y Little Sister, con
una preponderante y destacable actividad del cantante
Soeterboek. Completan la alineación Mike Davis (bajista de
Rob Halford), Joost van den Broek (tecladista de Sun Caged
y After Forever), y el baterista Reynold Carlson (Jag
Panzer y Driver).
La verdad es
que si eres amante del rock sureńo en todas sus
vertientes, éste es tu disco, no lo dejes pasar, lo
pondrás una y otra vez sin parar. Sin ser un amante del
género, les aseguro que no puedo dejar de escucharlo.

Back to the bluesy Seventies and into
the future: the elite alumni have a field
day.
Oh yes, this is twisted
indeed: the ensemble's name and the debut album's cover
suggest either bluegrass picking or neo-classic shredding,
so it's quite a guilty pleasure to find out it's a nice
slab of good old hard rock that opens up your crotch
chakras. It's there in the space between the burr of
ex-AFTER FOREVER Joost van den Broek's organ and Alan
Cotton's guitar riff of "Pretty Maureen" which sets the
tone for a slow 'n' sexy ride that sometime begs for a
tempo change but is tasty nevertheless, especially in the
piano boogie of "Little Sister".
The release comes with
the "Cold And Gray" rolling optimism, where the DRIVER
refugee Butch Carlson makes his drums dance, and the
"Leave Me Blue" clear-sky strum with former AYREON belter
Robert Soeterboek switching to the reflective folky mode
where his harmony vocals shine the brightest. Yet there's
nothing as powerful as the final "The Game" hooked on
erstwhile Rob Halford's bassist Mike Davis' rumble: the
song sounds a bit incongruous in this album's context but
might be a great indicator of the next one's direction.

Guitarist Alan Cotton is a monster!
Plain and simple, he plays like every old-school
axe-slinger wishes they could emulate. Although the band’s
name sounds like some kind of “Country Off-Shoot” cover
band, it’s not! It’s basically a combination of Alan’s
last name and that of singer Robert Soeterboek, who is
sometimes a deadringer for BAD COMPANY’s Paul Rodgers AND
Brian Howe with a little Joe Lynn Turner thrown in for
evil measure, if you can imagine such an iconic hero! With
the band sounding like a mixture of DEEP PURPLE, the
aforementioned BAD COMPANY and a touch of TOM PETTY &
THE HEARTBREAKERS (only musically…not vocally, thank
God!), they cover all the bases of the things we all
enjoyed about the 70’s! How relevant is this to today’s
music scene? Not one iota. But, for those of us who
remember when music didn’t sound like everything else on
the radio based on the songwriting and the vocal
acrobatics of a great singer, it’s everything we’ve been
screaming our heads off for.
Production-wise, it’s
as if they went further “old-school” and recorded with
good ol’, high-quality Ľ inch tape, something I’ve missed
ever since the first four VAN HALEN albums! Although some
of the song titles resemble those of others we remember of
this era; “Set Me Free”, “Twisted”, “Colorado”, “Little
Sister”, “Still Of The Night”, and “The Game”, they’re
not. The tracks are totally different compositions with
their own personalities that sound nothing like the other
artists who donned the same titles, except maybe
WHITESNAKE. Overall, this is a very enjoyable ride through
a time where music was about groove, soul, tasty guitar
licks, and vocals that cleared hurdles only dreamed of by
today’s standards. Basically, it’s nine songs, all with
their own personalities and a lot to chew on in the way of
content. I couldn’t be happier to be more wrong when I
first judged this disc by its cover art. For everyone

in erster Linie Gitarrist Alan Cotton und Sänger Robert
Soeterboek, der auch bei AYREON und WICKED SENSATION
beschäftigt ist. Aber auch der Rest der Band sind beileibe
keine Unbekannten – Schlagzeuger „Butch“ Carlson schwingt
die Sticks bei DRIVER und ROB ROCK, Basser Mike Davis
zupft auch bei der ROB HALFORD BAND und Keyboarder Joost
van der Broek gehört zu AFTER FOREVER. Wie hört sich der
Output einer solchen Allstar-Combon an? Wie DEEP PURPLE
und andere 70er-Jahre-Helden natürlich.
Gut, ganz so logisch
ist das auch wieder nicht, aber das Ergebnis weiß zu
überzeugen: THE COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND klingen wie eine
sanft modernisierte Version der großen Vorbilder, und
während sich auch etliche andere Einflüsse von vor
(mittlerweile fast schon) 40 Jahren finden lassen, klingt
DEEP PURPLE doch bei weitem am deutlichsten durch, was
wohl nicht zuletzt am Hammond-Orgel-Keyboard von Joost van
der Broek liegt. Das schöne an „Twisted“, dem ersten
Full-Length-Album der Mannen um Cotton und Soeterboek, ist
neben den Songs vor allem die Tatsache, dass hier absolute
Profis simple, eingängige und rockige Musik ohne Zwänge
machen dürfen – und das merkt man. Die Atmosphäre ist
relaxed, die Songs straight und fetzig, aber trotzdem
verspielt, und die Spielfreude der Band kommt erstklassig
rüber.
Ein bißchen verdorben
wird einem die Freude am modernisierten 70s Hard Rock aber
daran, dass die Produktion zu klinisch rein klingt. Die
Vorteile der Aufnahmemöglichkeiten im 21. Jahrhundert
seien dahingestellt – Musik wie die der COTTON SOETERBOEK
BAND muss im Sound (wenn auch in Maßen) dreckig, knarzig,
unsauber klingen. „Twisted“ klingt auf weite Strecken aber
eher chemisch gereinigt, mit Ausnahme der Orgel von Joost
van der Broek. Gesang, Gitarre und Schlagzeug sind für den
70er Jahre-Anspruch viel zu sauber produziert. Das stellt
natürlich kein gröberes Versäumnis dar, Songs wie „Pretty
Maureen“, der Titeltrack „Twisted“ oder auch das
balladeske „Leave Me Blue“ hätten aber mit einem etwas
schmutzigerem Sound noch wesentlich atmosphärischer
klingen können.
Abgesehen davon ist
„Twisted“ ein hochklassiges 70s Hard Rock-Album geworden,
dass sich Fans von WHITESNAKE, DEEP PURPLE und Konsorten
auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen sollten. Die Scheibe ist
mit in einer knappen halben Stunde zwar ziemlich kurz
geraten, Langeweile wird aber so zumindest im Keim
erstickt. Reinhören lohnt sich auf jeden
Fall!
Metal SymphonyThe Cotton Soeterboek Band, es un
grupo que práctica un Rock And Roll muy característico y
que fue formado en el ańo 2006, con un álbum debut bajo el
mismo nombre que la banda. The Cotton Soeterboek Band
posee fuertes influencias de los Whitesnake más bluseros e
incluso me atrevería a decir, que posee toques de Southern
Rock a lo Lynyrd Skynyrd.
La banda se formó
cuando Alan Cotton el creador primigenio de The Cotton
Soeterboek decidió buscar un cantante carismático que
proporcionará Rock y Blues a la vez, el elegido fue Robert
Soeterboek (Ayreon, Wicked Sensation) de esta manera Alan
decidió grabar su primer trabajo con este proyecto,
incluyendo en la batería a Wilfried Broekman y Wim Den
Boer frente al bajo.
De esta forma
consiguieron editar “The Cotton Soeterboek Band” en el ańo
2006, adquiriendo unas buenísimas críticas y comparándolos
con las grandes bandes del Hard Rock Americano que he
seńalado en un principio, hablándose también de una clara
influencia de los Black Crowes en su sonido.
Actualmente, The Cotton
Soeterboek Band, nos presentan “Twisted”, un auténtico
cańonazo de Blues Rock a la vieja usanza, que pasaré a
detallar a continuación.
Con unas melodías que
recuerdan muchísimo a la Serpiente Blanca, comienza “Set
Me Free”, un tema que posee una reminiscencia muy clara al
gran grupo de Hard Rock Americano y donde Alan Cotton
realiza un excelente solo de guitarra. Sin duda alguna una
buenísima canción, que puede llegar a ser un auténtico
cańonazo en directo. Un ritmo más pausado y con un sonido
no tan ańejo como el anterior, sirve `para abrir paso a
“Pretty Maureen” cuya principal característica es el ritmo
tan marcado por el bajo a cargo de Wim Den Boer, “Pretty
Maureen” es una mezcla muy bien combinada entre Soul y
Rock And Roll.
The Cotton Soeterboek
Band tiene importantes retazos de blues, y en el tema
single es donde mejor se puede apreciar, es decir en
“Twisted”, jugando con las melodías de los teclados y
alcanzando un climax más que sobresaliente. Quizás como
pega a este tema es la composición que puede que se quede
un poco floja bajo mi punto de vista. Se produce un
pequeńo bajón con el siguiente corte, “Colorado”, una
canción que no consigue transmitir ese sentimiento Rockero
del resto del álbum, y que se queda a caballo de ser uno
de los grandes temas de “Twisted”. “Colorado” presenta
bases rítmicas bastante sencillas al igual que sus
composiciones líricas las cuales están muy por debajo de
los cortes citados anteriormente.
Llegamos al tema
baladístico por excelencia en “Leave Me Blue” un medio
tiempo donde existe una prevalencia absoluta de los coros
durante el estribillo, consiguiéndose así una balada muy
bien ejecutada. Tras este parón , The Cotton Soeterboek
Band, vuelven a deleitarnos con “Little Sister” una
combinación de Southern Rock y de Hard Rock más crudo.
Buenas guitarras y un estribillo que hace tararearlo
durante todo el día, una canción muy pegadiza, y de las
que más sobresalen en “Twisted”.
Una intro de órgano se
encarga de dar paso a “Gold And Grey” el tema más melódico
de esta segunda entrega de The Cotton Soeterboek Band.
Llegamos prácticamente al final de “Twisted” con dos temas
uno de ellos es “Still Of The Night”, el cual sigue una
onda muy similar a “Gold And Grey”, vuelve a predominar el
órgano pero la diferencia radica en la voz de Robert
Soeterboek, la cual pasa de ser una voz melódica a
convertirse en una voz mucho más áspera y cruda. El
siguiente corte con el que se finaliza “Twisted” es “The
Game” una canción que nos vuelve a dejar un muy buen sabor
de boca principalmente en la línea musical, hay que
reconocer que los miembros de The Cotton Soeterboek Band
son unos musicazos como la copa de un pino, y una prueba
clara de esto, es “The Game”.
“Twisted” es un buen
álbum de Rock de la vieja escuela con muy buenos temas,
pero quizás en el conjunto global del disco, pueden
apreciarse ciertas carencias a nivel compositivo. Con esto
me refiero, a que algunos de los cortes, parece que se
quedan a mitad de terminar, creando de esta forma un
trabajo incompleto y por debajo de lo que a priori se
podía esperar de The Cotton Soeterboek Band.

(MAESTRO ALEX GREGORY) qui bien vite va s'allier ŕ Robert
SOETERBOEK (WICKED SENSATION, qui a également collaboré
avec AJ LUCASSEN au sein d'AYREON et STAR ONE). Les deux
hommes seront ici épaulés dans leur entreprise par ni plus
ni moins que Mike DAVIS (Basse- Rob HALFORD Band), Joost
VAN DEN BROEK (Claviers- AFTER FOREVER) et Reynold "Butch"
CARLSON (Batterie- DRIVER, ROB ROCK).
C'est sous cet impréssionnant line-up
que sort "Twisted", premier album plus que prometteur de
THE COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND.
Nous sommes ici en présence
d'un Hard Rock ŕ l'ancienne, varié et groovy, on pense
tour ŕ tour ŕ des groupes comme DEEP PURPLE ("Set Me
Free"), WHITESNAKE ("Twisted") ou dans un style plus
southern Rock LYNYRD SKYNYRD ("Leave Me Blue"). La section
rythmique est solide et puissante, et les morceaux sont
accrocheurs, parfaitement dans l'esprit Hard Rock 70's.
Le seul petit regret de ce
"Twisted" se situe dans sa durée, ŕ peine plus de 30
minutes, ça fait tout de męme un peu court pour une
musique de cette qualité.
A noter que le groupe ŕ depuis
été rejoint par deux nouveaux membres permanents, ŕ savoir
le bassiste Wim DEN BOER et le batteur Wilfried BROEKMAN
qui sont arrivés aprés l'enregistrement de "Twisted".
Un superbe album, ŕ recommander
aux fans des groupes précités, mais également aux amateurs
de RAINBOW, BAD COMPANY et THE BLACK CROWES, ou plus
simplement aux inconditionnels d'un Rock de grande
qualité.

Metal TempleI have to admit that the album’s
cover made me think that this release reached METAL TEMPLE
by mistake. I mean there is nothing evil, black or rotted
on the artwork; just two guitars standing in a green
field. So, with many doubts going round my mind I placed
the CD on my player and took the biography sheet on my
hands.
While the
old school Hard Rocker "Set Me Free" started waking
memories of mine I learned that this band features the
singer Robert Soeterboek who was with Arjen Lucassen and
his (at least) impressive STAR ONE tour. Robert was
approached by the guitarist Alan Cotton (MAESTRO ALEX
GREGORY) who had plans to form a brand new band. The
initial doubts born by the non-Metal artwork went away
with the second track "Pretty Maureen"; Hard Rock groovy
rhythms and hearty guitar solos wraped around Robert’s
’old school’ vocals are the main elements for this one.
Nothing fancy or over produced; just straightforward Hard
Rock with the beautiful Southern Rock finishing touches.
The homonymous song looks towards the WHITESNAKE territory
with the Coverdale vocals, DEEP PURPLE-ish keyboards and
of course ’dirty’ guitar bluesy licks. The album is built
upon the 70s atmosphere when music was born through deep
emotions standing away from the music trends and money
making philosophies. The US Rock backbone reveals itself
in the LYNYRD SKYNYRD clean guitar based song "Leave Me
Blue" and in the groovy "Gold And Gray" where the Southern
whiskey breeze dominates. "Still Of The Night" has a
genuinely addictive chorus followed by the beautiful piano
solo and topped by the harsh deep vocals making the choice
of the best track of the album a perfunctory
procedure.
The bottom
line is that "Twisted" was a pleasant surprise for my ears
that had the chance to listen to something different
’belonging’ to an almost forgotten decade. The band will
get you back to the basics with full of Hard Rock guitar
tunes, foot taping melodies and of course heartbreaking
lyrics. If any of the above vintage feelings are lost in
your memories or even new to you then this album will
guide through the whole process, so invest with your eyes
closed.

Background
The Cotton Soeterboek Band might be a
new name on people's lips, but the two main personnel of
this outfit have their own history to tell. Thankfully
they get to tell it together. Alan Cotton is a well
recognised name in the industry, both as a participating
band member with Maestro Alex Gregory and local New York
bands BTT, Nostradamus and Souls Of Ten. Also recognised
in the advertising and jingle world, Alan set about to
forming his own band. He had to look across to Europe to
find a talented Dutchman Robert Soeterboek to pick up the
role of a frontman. Soeterboek will be known to fans of
Ayreon and Wicked Sensation, but it is his sensational
bluesy soulful vocals that deliver the goods, sounding
like Ray Gillen, David Coverdale and John Sloman - all
wrapped up in one. The duo released an EP in 2006, and
soon returned to the studio with the above lineup for the
recording of the debut album 'Twisted'. More recently, the
band has taken on more of a Dutch influence, with Wim Den
Boer and Wilfried Broekman joining the band officially on
bass and drums respectively. The album was jointly
recorded between L.A and Colorado Springs, the bands fan
club is also based out of Colorado Springs, while there is
a song onboard called 'Colorado'. Must be something in the
water up there huh?
The Songs
The band's bio suggests that there
are echoes of the past in their music. Without doubt,
bands such as Free, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, early
Whitesnake and Lynyrd Skynyrd all get a look in here. The
band don't forget some of the current day reference points
either. The Black Crowes are a good fit. Cotton and
Soeterboek didn't muck around in the studio. They went in
and recorded these songs as if trying to capture lightning
in a bottle. It is on albums like these where the
spontaneity thing works best. The pretentiousness of
over-extended studio time and endless editing wouldn't
work with these guys!
Vocally,
'Set Me Free' is as close to Coverdale as you could get
without the Copyright lawyers knocking on your doorstep
asking you to politely refrain from impersonation! All
jokes aside, the solid guitarwork from Cotton plus the
swirling organ work takes you on a 70's joyride with
Richie Blackmore and Mick Box in the front seat, while Jon
Lord and Ken Hensley occupy the back seat and offer advice
along the way!
'Pretty Maureen' may be the
two-legged sizzler in this tale of love and remembrance,
the song itself is a mid-tempo blues based rocker with a
hot solo from Cotton to fry the fingers.
The boys
grind out a hard earned blues-belter with the title track
'Twisted'. Nothing untoward here, as this track in the
right in the middle zone of this band's preferred
style.
'Colorado'
offers a slightly different angle. The song sounds like
something that John Payne (formerly of Asia now of GPS)
would do. Soeterboek's vocal is very similar, and overall,
this has more of a mainstream rock vibe
happening.
Heading down the old country road (or
as the bio says.. 'pastoral rock') is 'Leave Me Blue'.
It's a simpler structure played with a stripped down sound
mainly and an emphasis on piano and organ, though the
chorus is still quite rocky and upfront.
Back to a harder blues style we go
with 'Little Sister'. Soeterboek's cool vocal will have
you making comparisons yet again, the guitar/organ
interplay combines effectively here, but to be honest, it
does all the way through the album.
'Gold And
Gray' is a bright and breezy tune, and has a Euro pop
thing happening, a la Michael Learns To Rock meets Crowded
House. Nice track..
Before you start thinking. no..
'Still Of The Night' is not a cover song by Coverdale's
mob. And despite Soeterboek sounding uncannily like the
Whitesnake frontman, this one ventures down the Black
Crowes path, with it's toe tapping piano work and ever
present organ.
Closing off the album is 'The Game'.
Again, this one offers up variety. The track is more hard
rock, the vocals also have a monotone aspect about them
which is obviously due to the song structure and
style.
In
Summary
As with this style of
music, it's familiar and inviting, but ironically does
have a point of difference in places. The CD is not an
overly long stay, clocking in at 31 minutes at best.
Sometimes, short, sharp and snappy is the way to go,
though I'm sure some punters will complain. With the now
significant Dutch influence in the band, no doubt the boys
might be inclined to play some of the blues oriented clubs
around Europe. If you get the opportunity, get out and see
them play live somewhere, as I'm sure these songs will
come to life onstage.

perfekt til denne type musikk, og gitarist Alan Cotton er
akkurat sĺ slepen og laid back som en gitarist skal vćre i
ett blues rock band. Det hele kan minne om en mer moderne
utgave av Lynyrd Skynyrd, ispedd litt 70 talls Deep Purple
og Whitesnake. Dette er ett album som umiddelbart fĺr deg

Somewhere, someone made
a mistake.
When I first opened my hotly awaited
Peacedogman package of new discs and saw this puppy
waiting for me, I was mildly bemused. On first impression,
I thought for sure this was a fey, rather pastoral folk
band. Why? Well, my small, working-on-two-neurons brain
misread the band name and logo as being the COTTON
SONGBOOK, and the album cover, a gentle mountainside scene
of rolling grass-covered hills with two guitars rather
bizarrely sticking out of nowhere did nothing to belie
this misconception.
And it’s a shame,
because what we have here is nothing like that first
impression. This is balls out, deeply PURPLE and
WHITESNAKE inspired British blues rock sure to open the
ear of everyone out there who agrees with me that
Whitesnake were incapable of making a decent album after
Mardsen and Moody left. The first three tracks, “Set Me
Free,” “Pretty Maureen,” and “Twisted,” all brim with
early WHITESNAKE energy. Featuring ex-members of Ayreon,
Rob Halford Band and After Forever, these guys aren’t
amateurs. Big riffs flow effortlessly, powered up with a
massive Jon Lord style keyboard. Alan Cotton’s solos are
quick and tight and Robert Soeterboek’s vocals, soulful
and bluesy, strongly bring about images of The Cov or even
Paul Rogers without being derivative. All three tracks are
winners and should be played often.
Things slow down after
that. While a couple of tunes like “Little Sister,” and
“The Game,” keep the retro rock energy flowing, the
ballads are all rather pedestrian and their loving homage
to their home state of Colorado is just shy of
embarrassing (no rocker should sing of flowers and fields
of grass. No rocker!); Still, as an out of left field
discovery, The COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND definitely made an
impression. I gotta say that I’d suggest changing the band
name to something more powerful and firing the art team,
because neither art nor name do anything to capture what
lies inside.

Who? That was my first
response. I then played a few samples of each track to see
what I was in for, and I thought “Oh No, more FM derived
shit”…..So the review took the back burner for a while,
and I didn’t spin the disc again for a few
days.
One thing is for sure once I listened
to the full disc, CSB wear their influences on their
sleeves, spanning the spectrum that exists between classic
English blues and American southern rock. Imagine classic
era Coverdale Deep Purple with a small helping of Bad
Company; wash the whole greasy mix down with a strong shot
of Molly Hatchet.
CSB is guitarist Alan
Cotton, vocalist Robert Soeterboek, bassist Wim Den Boer
and drummer Wilfried Broekman. In performing research for
this review I was shocked to learn that vocalist Robert
Soeterboek spent some time and recorded with the
underrated and criminally ignored Dutch 80’s metal band
Highway Chile. “Twisted” is the second effort by this
Dutch – American foursome and what makes this record so
strangely magnetic and irresistible is the
vocals.
Robert Soeterboek has
that velvety smooth vocal delivery that made you love Don
Dokken so much, but also has a solid command of the blues.
Let me digress a bit, I need to get this off of my chest.
It is such a strange anomaly to me that some of the best
blues rock vocalists are non-American, why is that? I
mean, Hell, we Americans invented the genre and besides
the original black masters of yesteryear, America is
really no match in the production of blues rock vocalists
to that of England, Scotland and Ireland. Think about it,
there really are no American blues-rock vocalists that can
compare to the likes of the Euro-Blues masters like Robert
Plant, Paul Rodgers, David Coverdale, Glen Hughes, Ian
Gillan, James Dewar, and Rory Gallagher. Now add Robert
Soeterboek to the list, yes folks he is that good, “Oh
Yeah” now add the Netherlands to that list of countries as
well.
“Twisted” is a collection of mid
paced blues rockers that will no doubt delight the biker
Bad Co. Led Zep classic rocker sect. I can see the
Harleys, biker babes, beards and barbecues reveling in
this slinky and dark blues rock affair now. Standout track
for me is “Colorado” with it’s somewhat Beatle-esque
opening sequence and memorable chorus. Additionally, the
opening track “Set me Free” drums up what Deep Purple’s
“Space Truckin” might sound like played at super slow
speed, but no doubt a toe – tapping blues rock slug fest
with it’s bass heavy riff. Guitarist Alan Cotton also
proves that less is more and never gets to the “over the
top” phase of guitar histrionics keeping the riffs simple
and his lead playing lazy and subdued, ala Mick
Ralphs.
PITRIFF RATING – 7/10 –
In some strange universe I find this refreshing. It fits
all the trappings of what classic rock FM radio has been
pounding away at for years, but there is something more to
it. Me thinks it’s the purity of it all, “Twisted” is
unmarred by “flavor of the month” sream-o garbage and the
“Linda Blair” vocal of just about everything else
nowadays. You know we never listened to our parents back
in the old days when they said “Now that’s music” ….well
boys and girls maybe this time we ought to give it a
shot.

musicians and guitarist ALAN COTTON they are the band THE
COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND. Thier first recording is now
finished and it is called 'Twisted', which musically is
something different than the bands some of the musicians
were involved with in the past. What we get to hear is
American midwestern almost Southern kinda Hardrock a la
LYNYRD SKYNYRD, BLACKFOOT... mixed with British 70s Bluesy
Hardrock a la WHITESNAKE, BAD COMPANY... with some
RAINBOW/DEEP PURPLEish guitarwork. Result is very
impressive, also thanks to the great vocalwork of Robert
and with songs like "Set me free", "Leave me blue" and
"Cold and gray" a recommended album to check out. It also
reminds me a bit of MANIC EDEN and BLACK CROWES, so if any
of the mentioned bands is up your liking, then check out
this band.

In welchem
Mischungsverhältnis müssen Ayreon und Alex Gregory
zusammengekippt werden, damit die Cotton Soeterboek Band
mit ihrem klassischen Hard Rock dabei heraus kommt?
Die Frage
lässt sich nicht so einfach beantworten und sollte
vielleicht besser über die Musik auf ihrer CD "Twisted"
beurteilt werden.
Allan Cotton, in
Diensten des Maestro Alex Gregory, suchte einen
charimatischen Sänger, um eine neue Band zu formieren. Den
fand er mit Robert Soeterboek, geboren in den
Niederlanden.
Die Kombination funktionierte auch im
Bereich Songwriting und in der Konsequenz musste auch ein
Album her. Hard Rock im Duo ginge ja vielleicht auch,
allerdings brauchte man für die Dampfmaschinen-Rhythmik
einen Bassisten sowie einen Drummer. Mit Reynold Carlson
(Driver, Rob Rock) und Tiefton-Bediener Mike Davis Rob
Halford waren die richtigen Partner für die
Hintermannschaft. Hard Rock mit einem vernünftigen
Keyboard-Sound ist selbstredend noch verdaulicher und den
Job übernahm Joost van den Broek (After Forever).
The Cotton Soeterboek Band steht für
klassisch Hard Rock-geprägte Musik, für die es ja viel
Vorbilder aus den siebziger-Jahren gibt und vornehmlich
auf der britischen Insel beheimatet sind/waren.
Markenzeichen des aus Amerika, genauer Colorado Springs
stammenden Quartetts sind fett riffende Gitarren, ein
veritabel singender Soeterboek und Keyboard-Teppiche, wie
sie seinerzeit von einem Jon Lord verlegt wurden.
Darüber hinaus lässt der Fünfer keine
ausladenen Song-Längen zu. Alle Nummern haben eine Drei
vor dem Doppelpunkt. Kompakt, könnte man da sagen. Oder
vielleicht denkt man auch an eine Radio-Tauglichkeit.
Einigen Songs würde dieser Stempel durchaus aufgedrückt
werden können, wie z.B. der Halb-Ballade "Leave Me
Blue".
Mit Punktabstrichen muss die Band
allerdings rechnen, wenn es um die Spielzeit des
Silberlings geht. Würde in den neun Tracks jetzt nur
verkrampfter Krach geboten, wäre die Album-Kürze ja OK,
aber es ist so, dass man ganz einfach mehr Hard Rock, ab
und an mit einem lightigem Southern Rock- oder Blues-Touch
getunt, auf die Lauscher bekommen möchte. Da sind dreißig
Minuten einfach zu wenig und mir kann niemand erzählen,
dass das Songwriter-Duo Cotton/Soeterboek mit nicht einmal
zehn Tracks ihre Ideen-Schmiede wegen Ausverkauf schon
schließen mussten. Etwas mehr wäre da schon angesagt,
zumal die beiden Band-Vorsteher echte Burner in den Hard
Rock-Zement gefräst haben.
Die
Soeterboek-Stimme ist wirklich gut anzuhören und mit
Backing Vocals gepaart, setzt man dem gesamten
sängerischen Spektakel noch einen oben drauf.
Ihre Musik
verpacken sie ganz geschickt in frisches Geschenkpapier,
sodass in der halben Stunde immer wieder mal alte Bekannte
durchschimmern, allerdings ohne es mit der
Identifikations-Feder zu übertreiben, sodass sie
kollabiert.
Der vorletzte Track
hat es echt in sich, weil zur rotztig verzerrten Gitarre
Herr van den Broek an den Keyboards sein Unwesen so weit
treibt, dass er, von einem bluesigen Honky-Tonk-Piano
ausgehend seinen Tasten-Weg bis zum jazzigen Spiel findet.
Klasse gemacht!
Hooklines sowie
Refrains sind Hinhörer und in Kombination mit dem einen
oder anderen überraschenden Break gelingt es der Cotton
Soeterboek Band die Aufmerksamkeit nicht erschlaffen zu
lassen.
Rundum geht "Twisted" gut ab, hat die
immer wieder gerne gehörte Hard Rock-Ballade im Gepäck und
überzeugt... wohlgemerkt, für eine halbe Stunde.

Mit
Holland verbindet man zwar einiges, aber für Rock'n'Roll
steht der Landesname nicht unbedingt. Trotzdem stammt
zumindest ein Großteil der Band, wenn nicht sogar alle,
aus den Niederlanden. Der Bandname ist eine Verquickung
der Namen von Bandgründer Alan Cotton und dem Frontmann
Robert Soeterboek.
Schon der Anfang zieht einen gleich in den Bann. Die Musik
ist eingängig und gut gespielt, und Roberts Stimme passt
dazu perfekt. Das ganze Album ist wirklich schön anzuhören
und macht richtig Lust darauf, mal mit einem dicken Auto
irgendwo durch die staubige Prärie zu fahren. Ein bisschen
Abwechslung ist auch auf dem Album zu finden, allerdings
nur in Maßen. Und auch die Ohrwürmer kommen nicht zu kurz.
Zwar gibt es ein paar Lieder, die einfach nicht hängen
bleiben, aber bis man „Pretty Maureen“, „Still of the
Night“ oder „The Game“ wieder aus den Ohren hat, gehen ein
paar Tage ins Land.
Leider ist das
Album nur eine halbe Stunde lang, damit kommt man
höchstens, um beim Bild zu bleiben, ein paar Meilen weit.
Weil je öfter man es hört, desto mehr nutzt es sich
einfach ab, und auch wenn ein paar einzelne Songs nicht
darunter leiden - die restlichen eben schon.
Wenn ihr
gerne guten Rock hört, dann lasst euch von dem seltsamen
Cover nicht abschrecken und greift zu, aber seid euch über
genannte Kritikpunkte im Klaren, nicht, dass ihr das
hinterher unter „Fehlkauf“ abbuchen müsst.

The Cotton Soeterboek
Band is trying to redefine the rock and roll genre with
their modern twist on things. Twisted is the bands first
full length album and the music scene is already saying
great things about the band. Is everything you hear true
or are these guys still too early in their
career?
If you have been
listening to mainstream rock music then there is a good
chance that you haven’t heard of The Cotton Soeterboek
Band. Fans of old and modern rock music will find a lot
that you’ll enjoy. Influences from all around the world
are on Twisted, which is the way a true rock and roll
music should be because rock music has so many different
sounds across the globe.
Throw in the best from
Whitesnake and Lynyrd Skynyrd, with some Deep Purple, and
you got The Cotton Soeterboek Band. More modern rock
albums from Ayreon and Iced Earth can be heard on Twisted
as well, giving it that sound that should please new fans
to rock music. When all of this is added together you get
this kind of music that has this great vibe, something you
really can’t hear too much when some up and coming bands
copy off of their favorite bands.
With the
instrumentation on this album you will open your mind to a
whole new world. Some of the tracks sounded like they
could have used more time, mainly with some intense solos.
There is a lot of talent in this band and I would hate to
see it be wasted with songs that don’t even hit the 4
minute mark.
Final Verdict
For their first full length I think
The Cotton Soeterboek Band did a nice job. Twisted has the
sound that will please fans of rock and roll music from
its early years, but at the same time it will also please
new fans. I really hope next time the band tries to extend
their songs with some solos, other than that everything
else can stay the same.

es seien verschollene Coverdale Songs aus den späten 70ern
aufgetaucht - so mein Eindruck nach dem ersten durchzappen
des Debuts Twisted der Cotton Soeterboek Band, die zwar
gänzlich neu ist, aber dennoch einige bekannte Gesichter
vorweisen kann.
Als da wären Drummer
Reynold "Butch" Carlson (Driver, Rob Rock), Mike Davis
(der Basser aus Rob Halfords Solo Truppe) und After
Forever Keyboarder Joost van den Broek. Zusammen mit
Bandleader Alan Cotton und Sänger Robert Soeterboek ergibt
das ein unschlagbares Team, welches sich ausnahmslos am
Southern Rock bzw. an den alten Whitesnake Sachen
orientiert.
Und vor allem die
Coverdale Vergleiche liegen äußerst schwer, dafür sorgt
schon allein Soeterboeks tiefe, rauchige Stimme. Wer etwas
mit den Solowerken des ex Deep Purple Sängers bzw. den
ersten Whitesnake Platten anfangen kann wird an Twisted
seine helle Freude haben. Das ist Blues Rock in
Reinkultur, unterstützt von einer schweren Hammond Orgel
verbunden mit sehr schönen Gitarren Soli.
Songmäßig ist nur
schwer etwas hervorzuheben, vielleicht "Pretty Maureen"
oder "Colorado" oder doch etwa der Titelsong "Twisted"?
Richtig abkacken tut die Cotton Soeterboek Band mit keinem
Titel, wobei allerdings ein schnelleres Stück dem Album
gut zu Gesicht gestanden hätte. So schlafen einem etwas
die Füße ein. Auch ist vorliegende CD mit knapp 33 Minuten
Spielzeit etwas knapp bemessen.
Fazit
Insgesamt ein doch sehr positiver
Eindruck, den die Jungs hier hinterlassen. Abgesehen von
dem etwas bescheuerten Cover, das eher an irisch Moos oder
die Atlantik-Seifenwerbung aus den 70er Jahren erinnert,
kann man auf jeden Fall eine Kaufempfehlung aussprechen.

A band formed by
guitarist Alan Cotton and vocalist Robert Soeterboek
(Ayreon/Wicked Sensation) backed up by Reynold 'Butch'
Carlson (Driver/Rob Rock) on drums, bassist Mike Davies
(Halford) and keyboards player Joost van Brock (After
Forever). Despite many of the band members previously
appearing in metal/progressive metal bands the Cotton
Soeterboek Band play classic hard rock with a blues meets
southern rock feel.
Two bands spring to mind instantly
after hearing the superb opener 'Set Me Free' - Molly
Hatchett and Lynyrd Skynyrd and vocally Robert Soeterboek
reminds me of Charlie Huhn (Ted Nugent/Deadringer). The
title track rocks out nicely with neat guitar and keyboard
interplay. The band can take it down a notch as they do on
the very Skynyrd like 'Leave Me Blue', again featuring the
enjoyable use of piano and guitar. 'Colorado' is a lovely
song peppered with classy harmonies on the chorus and
perfect for a sunny summer's day (should we ever get one
here in the UK again!). For heads down no-nonsense boogie
look no further than 'Little Sister' or 'The Game'. Only
one little quibble it would have been nice to have a
longer, epic song but hopefully the band have their own
'Freebird' or 'The Fall Of The Peacemakers' lined-up for
their next album.
An excellent
debut album for lovers of southern rock and those classic
70's bands like Bad Company and Deep Purple. There are
many great albums released this year but do try and get
this one as it is too good to become an ‘undiscovered gem’
in years to come.

Just when I thought I heard the
latest and greatest of indie music, along comes The Cotton
Soeterboek Band. Wow! This band is good, even awesome.
Alan Cotton and Robert Soeterboek may not be household
names in the so-called music biz or the first names off
your lips when thinking of melodic rock and roll. But this
is a match made in R'n'R heaven as Southern Comfort mixes
with Coke; its so good! Mr. Cotton comes from the breadth
of American rock including a significant dose of southern
rock. Mr. Soeterboek's (Ayreon, Wicked Sensation)
passionate vocals are well suited to this amalgam of
melodic hard rock.
Everything about
'Twisted' compels and satisfies. This is a heavy dose of
old school melodic rock. Just listen to the organ work
that permeates the whole work. Add to this Cotton's
amazing and fundamental fret work. He amazes on 'Set Me
Free,' 'Colorado,' simply beautiful, and 'Leave Me Blue,'
a song with Southern style. Mr. Soeterboek has both
passion and versatility. He shines on the aforementioned
'Colorado,' but also 'Leave Me Blue,' and the wonderful
'Still Of The Night.'
It's great to hear
history brought forward to present day. Too many bands
think they have to clone what's currently cool. Cotton and
Soeterboek demonstrate that solid and significant music is
still great and relevant. 'Twisted' is a sound, solid and
exciting work that breaks modern conventions and proves
that classic music is important and viable. Highly
recommended!

If you were listening to the radio in
the seventies and The Cotton Soeterboek Band came on, you
wouldn’t necessarily go, Wow! That band is so 2008!
But this hard-rock band isn’t stuck in the seventies
either. They do deliver the complexity, originality
and artistry expected in earlier decades. Each
soulful track could be released as a single – every song
is distinctive. (You will love “Colorado” – a love
song about our fair flyover state.) Alan Cotton and
Robert Soeterboek combine great songwriting and strong
vocals with powerful, gritty guitar riffs. While
their sound is all their own, the two were influenced by
Deep Purple and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and, if pressed, you could
say a couple tracks sound Black Crowes-ish. Overall
what you’re getting is a fresh, passionate, modernized –
versatile – seventies-based band with talent and energy
and personality. Can’t wait to see them live!

Wäre diese Welt eine bessere, müsste
THE COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND die großen Stadien voll machen,
in denen Fred Durst die Gänge fegt und Chad Kroeger den
Lokus putzt. Nun ist die Welt leider keine bessere, und so
sind die Herren aus Colorado hierzulande völlig unbekannt
und backen auch in ihrer Heimat ziemlich kleine Brötchen.
Dabei haben sie es so was von drauf!
Es ist wahrlich nicht besonders
originell und ziemlich leicht zu beschreiben, was hier
eine viel zu kurze halbe Stunde lang abgeht. Dies ist das
Album, das WHITESNAKE vielleicht aufgenommen hätten, wenn
sie in England geblieben und ab 1987 nicht so total
abgestunken wären. TCSB reichern ihren Hardrock also mit
etwas Blues und – anders als die Vorbilder – mit ein wenig
Southern Rock an und treffen von neun Versuchen
tatsächlich neunmal ins Schwarze. Hier trägt wirklich bis
ins Detail alles zum Hörvergnügen bei. Es gibt
wunderschöne Melodien, Soeterboek klingt wie Coverdales
eineiiger Zwilling und klanglich ist dies bis hin zum Jon
Lord Gedächntnissound absolute Referenzklasse für eine
Band mit sicherlich nicht übertrieben hohem Budget. Der
einzige Kritikpunkt wäre schon die Länge der Scheibe, ein
paar mehr Songs hätten es sein dürfen. Aber dann muss man
Knaller wie „Pretty Maureen“ oder „Colorado“ eben ein paar
Mal öfter hören.
FAZIT: Wer auf die erwähnten
WHITESNAKE, DEEP PURPLE, aber auch MOLLY HATCHET oder die
letzte ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY steht, sollte nicht lange
überlegen. Diese Hitdichte kriegen die meisten Bands nicht
mal auf einer „Best Of“ hin.

Twisted
Es ist erstaunlich wie
abschreckend ein seltsamer Band-Name wirken kann. THE
COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND klingt wohl unbestritten etwas
komisch und veranlasste mich zunächst dazu, mir mit bunten
und zugegeben albernen Gedankengängen scherzhaft
auszumalen, mit welcher Art Musik es man hier wohl zu tun
bekommen würde. Aufgrund des Namens kamen mir Gedanken wie
"Niederländischer Grachten-Rock" oder "Friesischer
Schunkel-Boogie", aber all diese Vorstellungen lösten sich
erstaunlich schnell in dünne Lüftchen auf.
"Twisted" ist mitnichten ein
schäbiges Hobbyalbum und auch keine Sauf- und
Kumpelvereinigung von mit Warzen bewachsenen alten
Ex-Seeleuten, die sich in Norddeutschland niedergelassen
haben. THE COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND bedienen eine kluge und
verdammt stimmige Vermischung aus erdigem British Rock und
Southern Rock amerikanischer Machart. Damit man sich
Vorstellungen von dieser Melange machen kann, seien hier
Namen wie THUNDER, DEEP PURPLE oder frühe WHITESNAKE, aber
auch BROTHER CANE oder auch MANIC EDEN genannt, wobei sich
THE COTTON SOETERBOEK BAND von allen eben jeweils nur eine
Scheibe abschneiden und diese zu einem Ganzen
zusammenfügen.
Die Vocals schlagen in dieselbe
Kerbe, wobei hin und wieder auch geniale, mehrstimmige
Leads gesungen werden, die durch die leicht raue Stimme
des Sängers erstaunlicherweise stark an Mark Lanegan (zu
Zeiten der SCREAMING TREES) und von der Melodieführung her
sogar hin und wieder ein klitzeklein wenig an Layne Staley
(ALICE IN CHAINS) erinnern, wenn auch letzterer Vergleich
natürlich nur mit etwas Phantasie nachzuvollziehen sein
dürfte, da die Musik auf "Twisted" überhaupt nicht in
Richtung Grunge Metal geht.
Dem seltsamen Band-Namen zum Trotz
haben wir es hier mit einem frischen und sauberen aber
trotzdem nie aalglatten Rock-Album zu tun, das sich
definitiv sehen lassen kann. Für Liebhaber unkomplizierter
Rock-Musik mit Hang zu alten Zeiten und weiter oben
genannten, im groben vergleichbaren Bands, sollte also
mindestens ein Testlauf Pflicht sein. Erstaunlich gut.

I had no idea what to expect when I
popped this in and I must say this was a pleasant
surprise. The band play rock n roll with a metal edge to
it sort of like Deep Purple at times. The singer has a
great soulful voice as he really fit the music well. The
production and the songs just flowed rather well and as
this played on, the more I was sucked in and by song # 4 I
was a fan and couldn't get enough of it. Track # 5 is
where this singer signs as he sings this song with such a
passion and emotion not matched by many. This was such a
great pleasure to review and this was an awesome band and
please do your ears a favor and check them
out.

den Broek (AFTER FOREVER). Nach einer in 2006 erschienenen
EP kommt man jetzt mit einem vollwertigen Album um die
Ecke – „Twisted“ nennt sich das neue Werk, dessen Inhalt
aber nicht dermaßen daneben ist wie das schlimme Cover
befürchten lässt. Musikalisch bleibt man in dem eher
melodisch ruhigen Fahrwasser des bluesorientierten
Southern Rock – unaufgeregt, aber auch ohne den großen Hit
geht es durch die grade mal 30 Minuten. Mit der MOLLY
HATCHET meets LYNYRD SKYNYRD Gedächtnisballade „Leave Me
Blue“ kommt man dem noch am nächsten. Manchesmal scheinen
auch die alten „englischen“ WHITESNAKE durch – aber da
bleibt man schon deswegen zurück, weil man deutlich
weniger Härte in die Waagschale wirft und statt dessen
mehr auf gemächlichen Songaufbau setzt. „Twisted“ wirkt
gewollt angestaubt und setzt auf Fans des klassisch
ruhigen Southern Rock – und hier macht man zwar eine mehr
als solide Figur, lässt aber auch Luft nach oben. (hardy)

I’ll say one thing about Colorado’s
own Cotton Soeterboek Band they are bringing back the
classic rock sound of the 70’s. Twisted could be played
alongside records by Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Skynyrd, Bad
Company, Cactus and The Outlaws. The Cotton Soeterboek
Band has a great 3 and a half minute song formula that
works relatively well for them. Some songs are better than
others of course but at the same time Twisted is a
consisted record featuring great driving riffs, Jon Lord
inspired organ accents, power drumming and a bluesy vocal.
Bands like The Cotton Soeterboek Band and Laidlaw are
waving the classic rock flag for the new generation of
fans. While The Cotton Soeterboek Band could benefit
refining their songs a little bit I feel that they could
potentially land a deal with a major label. The standout
tracks on Twisted are; “Pretty Maureen,” “Twisted” and
“Colorado.”

If you have spent the best part
of your musical life living under a rock rather than being
surrounded by it then, fear not, this is the album that
will put all that right. On the other hand if you love
your rock music to ooze quality and class then this is a
definite for you. The Cotton Soeterboek Band, built upon
the guitar of Alan Cotton and the voice of Robert
Soeterboek, manage to draw upon all the very best elements
of classic rock and mesh them together to make Twisted
what it is, a superb album.
This band is part
American, part European and drawn from an unlikely mix of
sources such as Ayreon, The (Rob) Halford Band, After
Forever and Aggressor. Throw in some David Coverdale Deep
Purple, some Lynyrd Skynyrd, some John Lawton era Uriah
Heep and you have the unlikely recipe that, when added
together with more than a fistful of magic dust, makes for
a cordon bleu creation. This is no time warp album though
- yes those elements are there but somehow it is all given
an added twist, a fresh production and a more up to date
vibe that has it sounding like you really should know it
but for some unknown reason, don't.
Twisted oozes quality
and it is quite obvious that the love of what the band
members are doing radiates from every note. If Ronnie van
Zant himself had walked into their studio I am sure he
would have loved what was going on. Coverdale's Deep
Purple are there in their Stormbringer era sitting
comfortably beside some southern gospel, some funk, a
touch of blues and some great British rock.
Twisted cannot be
missed by anyone whose bell is rung by any of the above –
or anyone who loves quality rock performed by musicians
who compliment the project so well. The result is a
sublime achievement that will satisfy even the most rose
tinted fan of seventies rock.
"Set Me Free" opens
with a drive and purpose belying its melodic base. "Pretty
Maureen" maintains that immediacy and energy in a totally
controlled way being polished and yet not over produced.
The title track is impossibly catchy. "Colorado" eases
into the sensitive. The piano on "Leave Me Blue" is
uncanny - surely that's Skynyrd's Billy Powell – no,
actually it is Joost van den Broek. "Little Sister"
switches us back to Deep Purple and is both gospel and
funky in equal measures. "Gold and Gray" delves further
south. "Still of the Night" has more excellent piano work
alongside a simple yet effective riff. "The Game", even
contains the line, 'I've been mistreated'. What more could
you ask for?
This is not a poor mans
impersonation, this is a highly successful amalgam of
everything great about great rock music. Twisted is so
perfectly balanced and poised and, of course, there is
that added ingredient. Maybe it is the love, understanding
and respect for what they are doing. Maybe it is the
quality musicianship or maybe it is the fact that if this
album had been released in 1974 it would no doubt be one
of the often quoted gems of the era. A triumph.

Without a shadow of a
doubt this disc will be mentioned again at the end of the
year summing up. Released a couple of months ago,
“Twisted” is the product of a partnership between
guitarist Alan Cotton, singer Robert Soeterboek and band
members who’s past history includes stints with the Rob
Halford Band, Ayreon and Driver among others. Indeed
I was pleased to discover that Soeterboek is the same man
who fronted the rather tasty Wicked Sensation “Reflected”
album a few years back.
Here though there’s an
unashamedly 70’s feel about the songs. Sure it’s all
new, original output with their own mark on everything but
importantly The Cotton Soeterboek Band’s sound recalls so
many of the bands that to me, define what the rock genre
is all about. Right from the opener bars of “Set Me
Free” my initial thoughts were along the lines of
“Blackmore… Deep Purple…certainly “Perfect Strangers”, but
also Mark 3?. A fine song to open any album, the
subtly distorted guitar tone recalls the excellent “Burn”
album, and with Soeterboek’s voice not unlike Coverdale’s
and a solid rhythm section underpinned by keyboards
similar to the way Jon Lord filled out many Deep Purple
and latterly Whitesnake songs, it sets a high
quality mark retained throughout the album.
“Colorado” marks the
first of a couple of slower numbers that impress even
though they follow the huge titled track “Twisted“.
Again impressive it had me this time recalling many a
mid-tempo ‘Snake song from their pre-MTV days.
“Leave Me Blue” though left me in no doubt that there are
some Lynyrd Skynyrd influences in this band too; this
southern tinged beauty reminding me of the classic
“Tuesday’s Gone”. Through gritty rockers
like “Little Maureen” and “The Game” the band give the
impression that live they’d be a blast too, and “Little
Sister“, reminiscent this time of Bad Company, does
nothing to reduce that thought.
That a track called “Still Of The
Night” is there is somewhat amusing given the similarities
to Whitesnake, but if this track had in fact been
introduced to me as new product by the Black Crowes I
wouldn’t have been at all surprised. Indeed I’d have
been delighted that they’d continued to come up with the
goods!
Like the sadly
over-looked “Road II Ruin” album that made my personal Top
10 albums of last year, this release sits as proof that
quality blues-based rock can still be found and can still
sound as fresh as ever. That a fair few of these
songs would have improved the recent Whitesnake album is a
measure of how highly I rate this and how much I enjoyed
it. Perhaps the only downside is that at just nine
songs and half an hour long it’s a “Mistreated” style epic
away from a classic. That said, it can’t ever be
accused of outstaying its welcome or being a disc padded
out with sub-standard filler and I’ve little doubt this
disc will accompany me on many a journey during the coming
months.
Highlight: Still of The
Night
Whatever happened to Dutch singer
Robert Soeterboek of Wicked Sensation fame? Well, look no
further as this project is led by the gifted shouter and
U.S. guitarist Alan Cotton (thus why the 'Cotton
Soeterboek Band' monicker). This is frankly just a great
'Southern Rock' CD and it's definitely up there among the
major acts releases of the genre as of lately.
I must confess that I never-ever
thought of Soeterboek as a 'Southern' vocalist. However,
his performance is quite stunning and not to mention
soulful. And it does sound American, hell, it's probably
more 'American' sounding than most of those 'real'
southern folks and acts.
The music may not be the most
'original' material as of lately. But... it's okay to be
cliche' as long as you're doing it with the passion and
attitude of these guys. They pay tribute and respect to
each and every act from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, to
late 70's Whitesnake, and back again to the Allman
Brothers. It's roaring hammond's (piano/keyboards), ultra
heavy blues guitars, loud drums, and pumping
bass-lines.
Opener ,"Set Me Free", is such a
heavy little number that it'll instantly knock you to the
ground. And it sounds like classic rock, you know, like
it's been written and performed in the 70's. "Pretty
Maureen" is the best song Molly Hatchet never recorded in
the late 70's/early 80's. "Twisted" is an album that will
probably sound even better when played live, where
Soeterboek's soulful voice and the smashing guitar work by
Cotton won't be inhibited by the studio. Recommended!

minutes (3'02 ŕ 3'53) naviguent sur les océans tumultueux
d'un (Heavy) Hard Rock Old School, avec quelques écumes de
Blues et de Southern Rock. Plus un refrain Gospel sur
Little Sister.
Quel retour vers le
passé ! Pointe alors l'envie irrésistible de remettre sur
la platine tous ces bons vieux dinosaures des années 70's
!
Dommage que Twisted ne dure
qu'une demi-heure. Mais j'ai trouvé la parade : je
l'écoute deux fois de suite, sans risque de saturation,
tellement les titres sont bons (Set Met Free, Pretty
Maureen, Twisted, les ballades Colorado et Leave Me Blue).
J'ai toutefois une petite préfence pour les deux derniers
titres : Still Of The Night avec sa rythmique plus
syncopée et son piano et The Game, plus pęchu. Mais comme
toujours, cela n'est qu'affaire de goűt et ils sont
strictement personnels !

As a professional music journalist,
more stuff tumbles into my mailbox than I can even afford
to listen to...but the Cotton Soeterboek album came from a
good, reliable source, so I put it on. Immediately those
surging organ chords had me digging out old Rainbow and
Deep Purple albums for favorable comparison...I kept
listening...the Soeterboek guys play modern blues-rock,
Southern country-fried tunes, Dylanesque pop...Twisted
isn't a homogenous exercise in futility where all the
songs sound the same, like so many bands trying to create
a brand imprint for themselves. This is rock and roll of
the old school; the stamp of quality, urgency and life
breathes from every note. It's smooth and warm as a
well-aged single malt, commanding attention; gutsy vocals,
deep in the pocket bass, guitars to make Eric Clapton
stand up and take notice. All I can say is if you wanted
the best, in the words of Kiss, you've got the best in the
capable hands of
The Cotton
Soeterboek Band.

Cotton Soeterboek Band - Twisted
No, it’s not a single guy
unfortunately named Cotton Soeterboek, but rather two
individual guys, Alan Cotton and Robert Soeterboek. Never
heard of these guys? Here’s a primer: Cotton is a
Birmingham-born, Texas-raised, Los Angeles-trained
guitarist who toured with Maestro Alex Gregory, a tour
that also included the likes of vocalist Mark Boals and
members of JETHRO TULL and David Lee Roth’s band. He’s
also made beer commercials. By contrast, Soeterboek may be
a little more well-known to you Metalheads, mainly due to
his work with the rock opera AYREON. Add in members of
HALFORD, AGGRESSOR, AFTER FOREVER, and Rob Rock’s band,
and well...you wouldn’t really expect the music to sound
like this. You would, however, expect it to be
good.
THE COTTON SOETERBOEK
BAND’s influences are very clear: take the 1970s British
Heavy Metal punch (not to mention the keyboards) of DEEP
PURPLE and RAINBOW, add a pinch of the whiskey-fuelled
twang of LYNYRD SKYNYRD and THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, and
top it all off with a very polished modern production. If
Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie Van Zant found a time machine
in 1974, used it to steal mixing equipment from 2008, then
wrote and recorded songs together back in 1974, the result
would be “Twisted” by THE COTTON SOETERBOEK
BAND.
What these two
songwriters do with their style of choice is quite great
indeed. Each song has its own slight variation on the
genre. “Set Me Free” is reminiscent of early, pre-Hair
Metal WHITESNAKE, as is the title track, whereas
“Colorado” has a more dissonant quality to it. “Leave Me
Blue” smacks of SKYNYRD, especially with Cotton’s doodly
guitar tone and the underlying piano. “Gold And Gray” is a
bit more Country-Rock, especially with all the talk of
whiskey breath and sunshine. “The Game” is a heavier song,
one that has that haunting yet rockin’ quality of certain
RAINBOW songs.
Cotton and Soeterboek’s
goal with “Twisted” was to deliver old-time Rock with a
fresh modern sound, and they delivered in spades. Southern
Rock isn’t a genre that gets a lot of attention nowadays,
so it’s nice to hear it factor so heavily into the overall
sound of “Twisted.” Thanks to the great production, the
album actually sounds pretty damn heavy for a style of
music that’s only a few pickup trucks away from Country.
If you love DEEP PURPLE and LYNYRD SKYNYRD, this album is
definitely a must-buy.

Twisted
Twisted is the full-length
debut from semi-supergroup The Cotton Soeterboek Band.
Comprised of guitarist Alan Cotton (Maestro Alex Gregory),
singer Robert Soeterboek (Ayreon, Star One, Wicked
Sensation), drummer Reynold "Butch" Carlson (Driver, Rob
Rock), bassist Mike Davis (Rob Halford Band) and
keyboardist Joost van den Broek (After Forever), Twisted
is a melodic hard rock affair that delivers on all levels
(Dutch bassist Wim den Boer and drummer Wilfried Broekman
have now officially joined the band in place of David and
Carlson). Opening cut "Set me Free" sets the tone
immediately, a memorable heavy rocker with raging
guitar/organ riffs, reminding instantly of classic Deep
Purple or Uriah Heep, while the title track and "Colorado"
are both bluesy hard rock numbers with Soeterboek's husky
vocals more than a tad reminiscent of David Coverdale's
early Whitesnake days. "Leave Me Blue" sees the band
trying hard to come up with a single, but it's the least
impressive track here despite some catchy hooks.
Elsewhere, songs like "Little Sister" , "Gold and Gray",
and "Still of the Night" have an almost Lynyrd
Skynyrd-meets-early Whitesnake feel to them, thanks to
some rootsy, Southern Rock styled guitar work from Cotton,
van den Broek's swirling organ & electric piano, and
Robert's powerful vocals. It's a shame this CD is barely
over 30 minutes, as there's lots of cool tunes here that
show a pretty diverse band that knows how to write catchy,
70's styled hard rock material. I could have easily taken
in another 3-4 songs with no problem, and certainly
enjoyed every second of it. A band to watch.

The Cotton Soeterboek Band is an
interesting mix of classic hard rock & classic
rock...they kinda remind me of Deep Purple when David
Coverdale was the bands singer & they definitley
remind me of White Snake in various moments when I
listened to this cd & that's not a bad thing at all!
The cd has a good sound too, it's not totally polished, it
maintains a slight rough edge, yet it's NOT under-produced
either...it's just a proper balance of both sides & it
makes it sound fresh compared to every other pro-tools
recorded record that's out now. The artwork, I will admit,
reminded me of Ace Frehley from KISS right away, it's got
a sunburst Les Paul guitar growing in a field as the theme
& it's something that, conceptually, it just reminds
me of Ace Frehley, but I guess that happens when you're a
KISS freak & I know that not everyone will see what I
saw in the artwork. Musically, the band is good, they have
strong songwriting, they are definitley rooted in the
structure of the song as opposed to the "Flash" &
disposable pop song & if you like classic sounding
hard rock, this is a band you'll dig!

"Twisted"
Style (rock)
Solid, steady guitar grooves
glide throughout this CD with an old school coolness that
fits like a well worn leather jacket. It won't
surprise me to find out this band is made up of older
musicians because that's how it comes across in my
ears. The song writing is consistent and every beat,
riff, and distortion from the guitar is well placed to add
texture. The production fits quite nicely allowing
the organic nature of each song to surface. Plus
each song is in the 3:30 range so none is too short or
stays too long. Like a party guest who always knows
exactly the appropriate time to arrive and leave.
The melodies and harmonies are smooth and something tells
me live these songs get the ladies singing along. I
do however have two issues with the CD. The first is
related to the overly used cover art throughout the entire
CD. And the second is related to the descriptions of
the songs on the inside jacket for what we (the listeners)
should pick-up on. As a wine lover I read plenty of
descriptions telling me what hints are in the wine.
Song descriptions are for the bio and not the CD.
Leave the hint of coffee and tobacco to the imagination of
the listener.

This band, with its
defiant-of-pronunciation name, is a blast from the past —
from the present! This is no old band, though if you heard
the group’s music and had no idea who they were you’d
assume it was some classic rock act you’d never heard of.
70s rock flavors (and NOT 70s pop flavors) come to life on
the richly produced and nice, meaty sound exhibited on
“Twisted,” which isn’t the sick proto-metal stuff the
title might suggest. Drawing heavily from the better
traits of the classic rock era and devoting loving
attention to the guitar and vocal personalities, The
Cotton Soeterboek Band has crafted a pastiche of a time in
sound that isn’t really a pastiche. It’s just guys making
music that they love. Gotta dig purity. Rockers young and
old should enjoy this.
